BMW i8 remap: what changes
More power and torque without rewriting the ECU or swapping any parts. The GAN box only adjusts the engine sensor signals. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the BMW i8 special
BMW i8 remap: the petrol half of a plug-in hybrid
Can a BMW i8 be tuned? A tuning box works on the petrol half of the car: the 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder B38, rated at 231 hp and 320 Nm. The front axle is driven by an electric motor, and the combined system output is 362 hp, or 374 hp from May 2018. At low revs the electric motor fills in torque for the petrol engine, while the GAN GA works on the petrol engine only. The catalogue lists one engine, the 1.5h at 231 hp, which the GAN GA lifts to 259 hp and 358 Nm.
Those are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno result from your own car. Production of the I12 Coupé ran from 2014 to June 2020, and the I15 Roadster arrived in 2018. In Britain the two bodies were sold as the BMW i8 Coupé and the BMW i8 Roadster, with the same petrol engine in both, and the i8 is no longer sold new.
BMW i8 remap: common questions
Which part of the i8's 374 hp does a tuning box work with?
The catalogue figures are for the petrol engine alone, at 231 hp; the 374 hp is the system figure, electric motor included. The GAN GA is rated at up to 12% more power for this engine, and that figure applies to the petrol engine, not to the system output.
BMW i8: tuning box or ECU remap?
The factory software stays as it is with a tuning box; an ECU remap replaces it. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the factory ECU software is left unchanged, and you can remove the module whenever you like.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
