GAN tuning box for Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz plug-in remap: no changes to the ECU software

The tuning box sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals – unlike a flash remap, which rewrites the ECU. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

FAQs

Mercedes-Benz remapping: questions

What should be checked on an OM 651 diesel before fitting a tuning box?

Start with the Delphi piezo injectors on the C 220 CDI, C 250 CDI, E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI: those from 2009 to 2011 could fail at around 50 thousand km and put the engine into limp mode. Separately, there was a 2014 recall of the chain tensioner. A tuning box does not repair or replace mechanical parts such as injectors or a timing chain, so have a garage look at both first.

M271 Kompressor or M271 CGI: what is the difference?

Built from 2002 to 2011, the M271 Kompressor relies on a mechanical supercharger. From 2009 the M271 EVO with CGI added a turbocharger and direct injection. Choose by engine and year: the catalogue pairs the Kompressor engines with the GAN GA+ and the CGI engines with the GAN GT. The C 200 Kompressor rises from 184 hp and 250 Nm to 206 hp and 280 Nm, the C 200 CGI from 184 hp and 270 Nm to 236 hp and 349 Nm.

Why does a C 250 CGI have a 1.8 and a C 300 a 2.0?

Since the W203 and W204 the number has been a power class, not a capacity: the W204 C 250 CGI has a 1.8-litre engine and the W205 C 300 a 2.0-litre one, and the C 250 CDI diesel is different again. That is why the catalogue asks for the engine code and year, not the number alone.

Mercedes remap or tuning box: what is left untouched?

A remap overwrites the factory software in the engine control unit, which makes it a different method from a tuning box. The GAN box works between the engine sensors and the ECU, adjusting their signals, so the factory software, checksums and flash counter remain untouched. The ECU software is never changed, and because the box can come off at any time your manufacturer's warranty is preserved.

Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?

Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are on your engine's page.

Will a tuning box affect my Mercedes-Benz warranty?

No. The box does not change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved. On top of that, we give an engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.

Tuning box or remap: which should I choose?

A flash remap permanently rewrites the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning box adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute. A flash remap can be the better choice if the engine has upgraded hardware, or if the car is out of warranty and you accept the risks.

About Mercedes-Benz engines

Mercedes-Benz chip tuning: what to know about the engines

Mercedes remap or tuning box: one diesel comes first

The OM 651 diesel is the place to start; it is the engine in the C 220 CDI, C 250 CDI, E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI. Its Delphi piezo injectors are the known weak point: those from 2009 to 2011 could fail at around 50 thousand km and leave the engine in limp mode. The timing chain and its tensioner come next, with a 2014 recall covering cars built between February and November of that year.

On the petrol side, look at the M271: it powers the C 200 CGI, the E 200 K, and the C 180 and C 200 Kompressor. The W204 C-Class headed its class in German registrations in 2010.

What the numbers and letters in a Mercedes badge mean

Since the W203 and W204, the number on the boot lid has been a power class rather than an engine size. Take the W204: a C 250 CGI has a 1.8-litre petrol, while the C 250 CDI diesel is a different size again. In the W205 a C 300 is a 2.0-litre and a C 400 a 3.0-litre. The letters carry meaning too: Kompressor is a mechanical supercharger, CGI is direct petrol injection, BlueEFFICIENCY is the W204's economy package, and 4MATIC is all-wheel drive. The M271 Kompressor was in production from 2002 to 2011, and the turbocharged, direct-injection M271 EVO with CGI followed from 2009.

In 2012 and 2013 the A, C and E received the 1.6 and 2.0-litre M270 and M274 turbo petrols, and the SLK followed in 2015. In the diesel range the V6 OM 642 arrived in 2005, and the OM 611/646 family was replaced by the OM 651 in 2008. CDI gave way to BlueTEC on diesels with SCR and AdBlue and then to a plain d, so a C 220 CDI becomes a C 220 BlueTEC and later a C 220 d. From 2014 a lower-case letter after the number marks the drive type: d for diesel, e for plug-in hybrid and h for hybrid, as in the C 350 e and C 300 h.

Which GAN box fits your Mercedes

Diesels and turbo engines mostly take the GAN GT in the catalogue, rated at up to 30% more power, while the naturally aspirated petrols take the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12%. So for a Mercedes remap the engine code decides: the W204 C 200 CGI, C 250 CGI and C 350 CDI all take the GAN GT. The GAN GT lifts the C 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY from 204 hp and 310 Nm to 261 hp and 397 Nm. Those are the stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.

Supercharged Kompressor engines, the C 200 Kompressor for one, take the GAN GA+. The same goes for V6 and V8 petrol engines like the C 350 and the C 63 AMG. With hybrids such as the C 300 h and C 350 e, look up the engine in the catalogue before you assume a figure. Mercedes UK states a plug-in hybrid by its combined system output, so compare like with like.

Model renamings and body codes

Renamings to know: SLK to SLC in 2016 and ML to GLE in autumn 2015; in September 2012 the A-Class W169 was replaced by the W176. In May 2009 the CLK W209 Coupé was replaced by the E-Class Coupé C207, and the C-Class W205 gave way to the W206 in 2021. By code, the C-Class runs W202 to W205, the E-Class W210 to W213, the SLK R170 to R172, the M-Class W163, W164 and W166, and the A-Class W168, W169, W176 and W177. UK listings describe the body as Saloon, Estate, Coupé or SUV; the W-code is an enthusiast and parts reference rather than a model name.

Which Mercedes-Benz models are in the catalog

The catalog covers 33 models from Mercedes-Benz. The most engines are listed for the E (102), C (88) and S (55). The biggest gain among the models is on the G: up to +122 hp.

Naturally aspirated Mercedes-Benz engines

For 174 naturally aspirated engines from Mercedes-Benz, there is the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% lower fuel consumption in ECO mode, which means better MPG. You can fit it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
