Chiptuning Subaru
Up to 30% more power for your Subaru
Our Subaru catalog covers 147 engines (models: 18, generations: 40). For 11% of the engines there are the GAN GT (up to 30% more power) and GAN GTL (up to 25%) tuning boxes; for the rest, the GAN GA and GAN GA+ (up to 12%). Each engine’s figures are on its own page.
Subaru plug-in remap: no changes to the ECU software
The tuning box sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals – unlike a flash remap, which rewrites the ECU. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

Subaru remapping: questions
How much does the Subaru 2.0D turbodiesel gain with the GAN GA+?
The catalogue takes the 2.0D from 150 hp and 350 Nm to 168 hp and 392 Nm with the GAN GA+. These are the stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.
What can the naturally aspirated EJ20, FB20 and EJ25 gain with the GAN GA+?
The 2.0 and 2.5 petrol engines marked i suit the GAN GA+, with up to 12% more power as the ceiling. Each engine has its own figures, so go by the power output and engine code of your car.
Which pages cover the WRX, STI and Forester XT turbo engines?
The EJ205, EJ207, EJ255 and EJ257 are the turbo engines of the WRX, STI and Forester XT. You will find them on the Impreza WRX and Forester pages, not on the page for the naturally aspirated Impreza.
Tuning box or remap for a Subaru boxer?
A remap rewrites the factory software, whereas the GAN tuning box works between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. The factory software, checksums and flash counter stay as they were, and the engine keeps its factory protections. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed and the box can come off at any time.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs on your engine's page.
Will a tuning box affect my Subaru warranty?
No. The box does not change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved. On top of that, we give an engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.
Tuning box or remap: which should I choose?
A flash remap permanently rewrites the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning box adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute. A flash remap can be the better choice if the engine has upgraded hardware, or if the car is out of warranty and you accept the risks.
Subaru chip tuning: what to know about the engines
Subaru remap: the diesel arrived in March 2008
A Subaru remap or tuning box has had two halves since March 2008, the month the first Subaru diesel arrived in Europe, in the Legacy and Outback. The engine is the 2.0 boxer diesel EE20, 150 hp and 350 Nm, which debuted in Geneva; the Impreza followed at the start of 2009. Subaru calls it the Boxer Diesel: the world's first series-production boxer diesel in a passenger car.
In the catalogue the 2.0D, a turbodiesel, takes the GAN GA+ and goes from its standard 150 hp and 350 Nm to 168 hp and 392 Nm. It remains the single diesel that Subaru has built itself. On the Impreza, the diesel belongs to the third generation.
How to read Subaru engine codes
Apart from models built on Toyota or Daihatsu platforms, every engine in Subaru's recent European range is a boxer. Start from the engine code: family letters plus two digits for the displacement. EJ20 and FB20 are 2.0 litres, EJ25 and FB25 are 2.5 litres, and EZ30 and EZ36 are the six-cylinder 3.0 and 3.6. An i after the displacement means a naturally aspirated petrol; WRX, STI, XT and GT mean a turbo. The version sits in the three-digit EJ code: the EJ205 and EJ207 are the turbo 2.0 engines of the WRX and STI, and the EJ255 and EJ257 the turbo 2.5 engines of the Forester XT, WRX and STI. The EJ251 and EJ253 are the naturally aspirated 2.5 versions.
In short, an i in the name means no turbo, and XT or STI means one. The EJ25 shows the logic: a 2.5-litre family, of which the EJ253 is one naturally aspirated version. The six-cylinder 3.0 and 3.6, the EZ30 and EZ36, take the GAN GA+. So do the naturally aspirated i versions, at up to 12% more power with the GAN GA+.

Hybrids, and which models are covered
The e-Boxer is a mild hybrid, shown on the Forester and XV in Geneva in March 2019 and arriving on the Impreza in March 2020 as the 2.0ie, with 150 hp and an electric motor. It replaced the naturally aspirated, direct-injection FB20D. In Europe the fifth-generation Impreza is hatchback only. The turbo WRX and STI have pages of their own, apart from the Impreza.
In Britain the Crosstrek has replaced the XV, and the Outback carries on from the Legacy estate line. The Impreza, Legacy and XV are no longer sold new in Britain. Besides the Impreza, the range includes the Legacy, Outback, Forester, XV and BRZ.
Which Subaru models are in the catalog
The catalog covers 18 models from Subaru. The most engines are listed for the Legacy (28), Impreza (26) and Forester (25). The biggest gain among the models is on the Impreza WRX: up to +76 hp.
Naturally aspirated Subaru engines
For 123 naturally aspirated engines from Subaru, there is the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% lower fuel consumption in ECO mode, which means better MPG. You can fit it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
How to find your Subaru engine
Pick your model from the list above, then the generation by model year and chassis code, then the engine by the power output in your registration document. The engine page shows the exact gain and the price of the box.
