How much does a 2.2 SKYACTIV-D 150 gain from a GAN tuning box?
The 2.2 SKYACTIV-D 150 makes 150 hp and 380 Nm as standard, and 193 hp and 481 Nm with the GAN GT. These are the stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car. The 175 hp version (420 Nm) is stated at 205 hp and 528 Nm with the GAN GT, so match your car by output.
What does a 2.0 SKYACTIV-G at 120 or 165 hp gain?
Neither engine has a turbo: both are 2.0-litre petrols. Both suit the GAN GA+, which is rated at up to 12% for naturally aspirated engines, so expect a smaller gain than on the diesel above. The 2.0 SKYACTIV-G 165, at 165 hp and 210 Nm, goes to 185 hp and 235 Nm, and the 120 hp version to 134 hp and 235 Nm.
Can a Mazda with the e-SKYACTIV G mild hybrid take a tuning box?
On the Mazda3 and CX-30, e-SKYACTIV G and X are 24-volt mild hybrids with a belt-driven starter-generator, not full hybrids. Look your car up by engine and output on the Mazda3 page: if your engine is there, it has a stated figure; if not, there isn't one.
Mazda diesel: tuning box or remap?
A remap replaces the factory software inside the engine control unit, so it is a different approach from a tuning box. The GAN box sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, so the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay as they were. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved, because the ECU software is never changed and the box can come off at any time.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs on your engine's page.
Will a tuning box affect my Mazda warranty?
No. The box does not change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved. On top of that, we give an engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.
Tuning box or remap: which should I choose?
A flash remap permanently rewrites the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning box adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute. A flash remap can be the better choice if the engine has upgraded hardware, or if the car is out of warranty and you accept the risks.

Mazda remap: most of the range runs on petrol
Anyone considering a Mazda3 remap or tuning box should start with one market fact from Germany: most Mazdas there run on petrol, and the diesel share has fallen steadily. By 2018 the diesel share of CX-5 registrations was 28%, down from 65–66% in 2013 and 2014. For the Mazda6 the diesel share went from 57–60% in 2014–2016 to 26% in 2018, and for the Mazda3 it was just 3% in 2020.
Between 2020 and 2025 the mild-hybrid petrol took 97–100% of Mazda3 registrations. Almost every Mazda2 is a petrol; diesel makes up only 0–7% of its registrations. Since launch, the Mazda3 and Mazda6 have led German registrations, ahead of the Mazda2 and the CX-5, which has been sold since 2012.
How to read SKYACTIV engine names
Mazda replaced its MZR petrol and MZR-CD diesel engines with SKYACTIV-G and SKYACTIV-D between 2012 and 2013. In 2012 it was the Mazda6 GJ and the CX-5 that switched; the Mazda3 BM followed in October 2013. European names put the output in hp after SKYACTIV-G or SKYACTIV-D, not the engine size. A SKYACTIV-G 100 is therefore a 1.5-litre, the SKYACTIV-G 120 and 165 are 2.0-litre units, and the SKYACTIV-D 150 is a 2.2. Of the older names, MZR-CD covers Mazda's own 2.0 and 2.2 common-rail diesels, while MZ-CD is the 1.6 built by Ford and PSA.
On the Mazda3 and CX-30, e-SKYACTIV G and X denote a 24-volt mild hybrid with a belt-driven starter-generator rather than a full hybrid. UK-market Mazdas wear the same engine badges: SKYACTIV-G, e-SKYACTIV G and e-SKYACTIV D. The Mazda3 lost its 1.8 SKYACTIV-D diesel in March 2021, and the Mazda6 was built for Europe until December 2024. Discontinued models such as these are mostly found used in Britain.

Which GAN box fits which Mazda
Every SKYACTIV-G engine in Europe is naturally aspirated. On the diesel side you will meet SKYACTIV-D 105, 150 and 175, and on the petrol side SKYACTIV-G 100, 120 and 165. Each engine has its box in the catalogue: most diesels take the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power, and the naturally aspirated petrols the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12%. For a Mazda 6 or CX-5 remap the engine is the first question: the 2.2 SKYACTIV-D at 150 hp (CX-5, Mazda6, Mazda3) and at 175 hp (CX-5, Mazda6) both take the GAN GT.
On the MX-5, the 1.5 SKYACTIV-G is listed at 132 hp in Britain, and the catalogue has a 132 hp row for it. The sporty version, badged MPS in Europe, runs the 2.3 DISI Turbo engine, so look it up by model and generation. SKYACTIV-X pairs spark-controlled compression ignition with a Roots supercharger; its figures are on the model page, so don't assume one.
