Mazda BT-50 remap: what changes
The GAN box plugs in between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals, while a flash remap rewrites the ECU itself. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the Mazda BT-50 special
Mazda BT-50 remap: the 2.5 MZR-CD diesel
Fully loaded, a BT-50 leans on the 330 Nm its 2.5 MZR-CD diesel makes at 1,800 rpm. European BT-50s have the 2.5 MZR-CD, a common-rail diesel with 143 hp. In Britain it was sold simply as the BT-50, with the 2.5 MZR Turbo diesel in 4x2 and 4x4 forms and, from 2007, a 3.0 diesel with 156 hp that also has a catalogue row; it has since been withdrawn.
The same engine sits in the Ford Ranger, and the BT-50 is its technical twin, built in Thailand. For a BT-50 remap the answer is therefore the GAN GT tuning box, fitted to the 2.5 MZR-CD with 143 hp. Body styles were the extended cab and the double cab, and the facelift of autumn 2008 did not touch the engine.
Mazda BT-50 remap: common questions
BT-50 ECU remapping or tuning box: what is left untouched?
ECU remapping rewrites the factory software in the engine control unit, whereas a tuning box works differently. Because the GAN box works between the engine sensors and the ECU, it changes the signals they send, and the factory software, checksums and flash counter stay as they were. The ECU software is never changed, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved, and you can remove the box whenever you want.
How much power does a GAN GT add to the BT-50 2.5 MZR-CD with 143 hp?
On the 143 hp, 330 Nm diesel the GAN GT reaches 185 hp and 421 Nm, a gain of 42 hp. A turbo diesel is the engine the GAN GT is designed for, with a rating of up to 30% more power. Those figures are rated gains for this engine type rather than dyno results from your car.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?
Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
