What makes the Mazda CX-3 special
Mazda CX-3 remap: tuning a petrol crossover
In Germany, diesels made up only about 6% of Mazda CX-3 registrations between 2015 and 2022, and none were registered from 2020. So the typical CX-3 has the 2.0 SKYACTIV-G petrol: direct injection and no turbocharger. In front-wheel-drive form it makes 120 hp and 204 Nm, while the 150 hp version is available only with all-wheel drive.
Both versions work with a tuning box; the GAN GA+ takes the 150 hp CX-3 to 168 hp and 228 Nm. Read these as the stated gains for the engine type, not as a dyno reading of your car. On the 120 hp car, the same module delivers 134 hp and 228 Nm.
The 2018 facelift and the diesels
Mazda showed the CX-3, a five-door small crossover on the Mazda2 platform, in Geneva in March 2015, and sales began in June 2015. In Britain it was sold new from June 2015 until 2021, with a pause at the end of 2019 when the CX-30 arrived. There has only ever been one generation; the July 2018 facelift brought a new grille and an electric parking brake. German CX-3 registrations reached their peak in 2019.
The July 2018 update lifts the 2.0 petrol to 121 hp and 207 Nm, and until 2020 the 150 hp car also has 207 Nm. A 121 hp car is best matched to the 120 hp version in the catalogue. UK cars launched in SE, SE Nav, SE-L, SE-L Nav and Sport Nav trims, and none of those names tells you the engine, so go by the hp figure in your registration document. Two diesels existed: the 1.5 SKYACTIV-D with 105 hp and 270 Nm, and from July 2018 the 1.8 SKYACTIV-D with 115 hp in its place.

Mazda CX-3 remap: is mine the 120 hp front-wheel-drive car or the 150 hp AWD?
The drive decides it: front-wheel drive means 120 hp, all-wheel drive means 150 hp. Both are covered by the GAN GA+, which is rated at up to 12% more power. With an economical driving style, the catalogue also lists up to 15% lower fuel consumption.
What does a tuning box change on the CX-3, and what stays untouched?
A remap rewrites the factory software; the CX-3 tuning box does not, because it sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. The factory software, checksums and flash counter stay as they are. The ECU software is never changed, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved, and the module can come off at any time.
Does the catalogue include the CX-3 diesel?
No. Neither the 1.5 SKYACTIV-D at 105 hp nor the 1.8 SKYACTIV-D at 115 hp has a row in the catalogue.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
