What makes the Mercedes-Benz C W204 special

Mercedes C-Class W204 remap: start with the injectors and the chain

Two parts of the OM 651 diesel in the C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI are known to give trouble: the Delphi piezo injectors and the chain tensioner. Cars built between 2008 and 2011 had injectors that gave out at around 50 thousand km and sent the engine into limp mode. Injector faults on the OM 651 are linked with rough running, smoke and diesel getting into the engine oil.

A chain tensioner recall on the OM 651 in 2014 covered cars built between February and November 2014. A cold-start rattle is the sign to chase on the four-cylinder M271 petrols and on facelift C 220 CDI cars with the OM 651. A tuning box cannot repair or replace mechanical parts, injectors and chain included, so ask a workshop to check both first.

Which GAN box fits which W204

The petrol CGI cars, the C 180, C 200 and C 250, are GAN GT applications. The CDI diesels are too, from the C 200 CDI to the C 350 CDI. For the GAN GA+, look at the V6 C 280, C 300 and C 350 and at the 184 hp C 200 Kompressor.

To remap a W204, go by engine code and build year, not by the badge. In Britain the car is written C-Class W204 rather than with a Mk number, with badges such as C180 Kompressor, C200 Kompressor, C180 BlueEFFICIENCY, C220 CDI and C250 CDI. The W204 saloon, the S204 estate and the C204 coupe share one catalogue generation, so the same engine figures apply to all three.

Mercedes-Benz C W204 remap: common questions

C 220 CDI and C 250 CDI (OM 651): what to check before a W204 remap?

Solenoid injectors reached the 220 CDI from mid-2010 or spring 2011. Piezo injectors stayed on the 250 CDI until a service action fitted solenoid ones with a new control unit. The GAN GT covers the C 220 CDI with 170 hp (OM 646 or OM 651) and the C 250 CDI with 204 hp and 500 Nm.

C 200 CGI, C 250 CGI and C 180 (M271): what does the box change?

Listed at 204 hp and 310 Nm, the M271 EVO petrol turbo in the C 250 CGI reaches 261 hp and 397 Nm with the GAN GT. Read these as the stated figures for the engine type, not as a dyno reading of your own car. The box works on the signals between the engine sensors and the ECU, and the engine's own protections stay active.

Which GAN box does a W204 C 180 take?

Every petrol C 180 has 156 hp. The engine was the 1.8 Kompressor until October 2008, the 1.6 BlueEFFICIENCY from April 2008 to April 2010, the 1.8 CGI from November 2009 to April 2012 and the 1.6 turbo M274 from then on. The CGI and M274 cars take the GAN GT, so the build date decides.

Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?

Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
