What makes the Daihatsu Copen special
Daihatsu Copen remap: the engine change of 2006
The Copen changed engines in Germany in spring 2006: the right-hand-drive 0.66 turbo made way for the left-hand-drive 1.3. Daihatsu sold the Copen in Britain from 2003 until it withdrew from the UK market, and UK cars are described as the 660cc turbo and, from 2007, the 1.3-litre petrol. The 0.66 turbo JB-DET reached German buyers from 2004 to the end of 2005 at 68 hp; the catalogue's 64 hp and 110 Nm are the Japanese kei specification.
UK guides specify an oil change every 3,000 miles and a major service every 6,000 miles on the early 660cc turbo, so settle the service history before you add power. The 1.3 K3-VE makes 87 hp and 120 Nm. 2006 was also the Copen's best year in Germany: 802 of all 2,511 new Copens. Whichever engine your Copen has, the GAN GA+ tuning box is the one that fits.

Can a Copen take a tuning box?
On the 1.3 the box raises output from 87 hp to 97 hp. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power; read that as the stated gain for the engine type, not a dyno reading of your own car.
Daihatsu Copen remap: 0.66 turbo or 1.3, which engine is mine?
In the German market the 0.66 turbo is the right-hand-drive L880 and the 1.3 the left-hand-drive L881.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
