Not sure which engine you have?
The badge alone is not enough: in this generation, the same engine designation came in different power outputs, each with its own calibration. Check the power output in your registration document and find the matching row.

Ford Explorer V remap: what changes
The GAN box plugs in between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals, while a flash remap rewrites the ECU itself. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the Ford Explorer V special
Ford Explorer U502 remap from 2010: a grey import with American engines
Any Ford Explorer U502 on a British road was brought in privately, as Ford never listed it in its regular UK range. Ford's own European sales ran from 1993 to 2001, and from 2019 only as a plug-in hybrid. The fifth generation was assembled in Chicago between December 2010 and March 2019, and some listings give its first model year, 2011. So a tuning box for the Explorer is chosen from the American engine range, not a UK one.
Which engines take which GAN box
Start with the 3.5 EcoBoost of the Sport: a twin-turbo V6 rated at 370 hp, which takes the GAN GT. The Sport with this engine was built from 2013 until production ended. The Platinum also had it from 2016, and both were North American-market trims rather than regular UK models.
The four-cylinder 2.3 EcoBoost, sold from 2016 to 2019, takes the GAN GT as well. The naturally aspirated 3.5 Ti-VCT V6 with 294 hp is the one for the GAN GA+. Sport and Platinum cars are treated alike: the engine, not the trim, decides which box you need.
Ford Explorer V remap: common questions
Ford Explorer 3.5 EcoBoost remap: what does the GAN GT add?
On the 3.5 EcoBoost the GAN GT lifts output from 370 hp to 433 hp. Read these as the stated figures for the engine type, not as a dyno reading of your own car.
Imported Explorer with the 3.5 Ti-VCT V6: which GAN box does it take?
The 3.5 Ti-VCT V6 is naturally aspirated, so the GAN GA+ is the box for it, rated at up to 12% more power.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
