About the generation

What makes the Ford Mondeo IV special

Ford Mondeo Mk4 remap: diesel or petrol

A diesel and a petrol Mondeo Mk4 of similar output can need different modules, so a tuning box starts by splitting the range in two. For a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi remap the car to look at is the 140 hp version, the main diesel between 2007 and 2014. Of the two, the 140 hp 2.0 TDCi uses the GAN GT, and the naturally aspirated 161 hp 2.3 Duratec the GAN GA+. British trim badges include Edge, Zetec, Ghia and Titanium, and the car is also written as the Mondeo IV; none of them tells you which engine is under the bonnet.

The rest of the Mk4 range

The other diesels take the GAN GT too: the 1.8 TDCi at 125 hp, the 2.0 TDCi at 116, 131 and 163 hp, the 2.2 TDCi at 175 and 200 hp and the 1.6 TDCi at 116 hp. Britain had the 2.0 TDCi at both 140 and 163 hp, so choose your row by the hp figure rather than by the badge. The 2.0 EcoBoost came in spring 2010 with 203 hp, and the December 2010 facelift brought a 239 hp version and the 1.6 EcoBoost with 160 hp.

Ford kept the Volvo-built 2.5T five-cylinder with 220 hp until November 2010, and it takes the GAN GT as well. Two Duratec petrols, the 1.6 Ti-VCT and the 2.0 with 145 hp, are further GAN GA+ applications.

Mondeo 2.2 TDCi 200 remap: what does the GAN GT add?

The GAN GT lifts the 2.2 TDCi 200 to 256 hp in the catalogue. Read these as the stated figures for the engine type, not as a dyno reading of your own car. Germany recalled 2.2 TDCi 200 cars built from January 2012 to February 2013 over their injector seal rings.

Which GAN box suits the Mondeo Mk4 turbo petrols?

The 1.6 EcoBoost (160 hp), the 2.0 EcoBoost (203 and 239 hp) and the 2.5T are all GAN GT engines, and the GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power.

Can the Duratec petrol Mondeos take a tuning box?

Yes. The GAN GA+ is the box for the naturally aspirated Duratec engines, rated at up to 12% more power.

Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
