What makes the Honda CR-Z special
Honda CR-Z remap: where the hybrid runs out of pull
On the Honda CR-Z the electric assistance fades at about 132 km/h, so at motorway speed the petrol engine is on its own. The tuning box works on the 1.5 i-VTEC petrol engine only, which has 114 hp before the 2013 facelift and 120 hp after it. In Britain the car is advertised as the 1.5 IMA Hybrid, in S, Sport, GT and GT Nav trims, not by a generation number.
UK dealers sold the CR-Z from 2010 until Honda withdrew it from Europe in 2014, so the cars on offer today are used ones. The system output of 124 hp or 137 hp adds the electric motor to the petrol engine, so it is not a gain. In the catalogue these engines are listed at 114 hp and 120 hp, and each gains 14 hp and 17 Nm with the GAN GA+.

CR-Z tuning box or flash remap: which fits?
There are two routes: a flash remap rewrites the factory software in the engine control unit (ECU), while the GAN tuning box adjusts the signals from the engine sensors. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.
Does the facelift CR-Z have its own entry?
Yes. The facelift brought a lithium-ion battery and a 120 hp engine, and the catalogue lists it separately for the GAN GA+. The GAN GA+ gives up to 12% more power, so expect a modest gain from an engine this small. UK buying guides treat the IMA hybrid battery as a key check on older cars, and a tuning box is no substitute for that check.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
