What makes the Honda Prelude special
Honda Prelude remap: the H22A VTEC and its European outputs
The Prelude engine most people mean is the 2.2 VTEC of the H series: in the fourth-generation BB1 it makes 185 hp and 212 Nm. Honda sold the Prelude new in Britain up to the fifth generation, and the sixth-generation Prelude Hybrid is offered here again. The fifth generation, the BB6 and BB8, reached Europe in February 1997 and held on to 185 hp, now with 206 Nm, in the H22A5 and H22A8. A 200 hp version followed in 1999; the 200 hp row in the catalogue is that European engine.
In Britain the step from 185 hp to 200 hp is the first thing to check, because it changes the starting point for tuning. Your generation and the output in your vehicle documents decide which box fits. The two are known as the 4th gen and 5th gen, coded BB1 to BB3 and BB6 to BB9. ATTS torque distribution and the optional 4WS rear steering are features of the car rather than the engine.
The other Prelude engines
The fourth generation launched in 1992 with a 2.0 at 133 hp and 179 Nm and a 2.3 at 160 hp and 209 Nm. The 2.2 VTEC of the BB1 followed in January 1993. The 212 Nm BB1 version of the 2.2 VTEC has no row in the catalogue. The fifth generation kept the 2.0 at 133 hp. With the GAN GA+ the 2.3 reaches 179 hp and 234 Nm, and the 2.0 reaches 149 hp and 200 Nm.
The H22A5 and H22A8 were European engines, recognisable by their red valve covers. German sales of the fifth generation ran to the end of 2000, while production continued until 2002. The 2.0 e:HEV of the sixth generation, a hybrid coupé offered in Europe since January 2026, has no row in the catalogue. In Britain that car is simply the Prelude Hybrid, a self-charging full hybrid rather than a plug-in.
