What makes the Kia K5 special
Kia K5 remap: in Britain the car is the Optima
Kia UK sold the Optima, not the K5, and a K5 on British roads is a grey import. K5 is simply the badge the Optima V (DL3) wears from 2019 outside Europe, which is why it is not a European Kia. In 2019 Kia Europe's chief operating officer said there were no plans for a European K5, and pointed to the shrinking market for saloons.
The European Optima ended in 2019 to 2020 and the K5 did not take its place. That is why the engines under K5 come from several generations: for a tuning box the engine counts, not the badge. The Optima most British drivers know, the JF with its 1.7 CRDi diesel, belongs on the Optima page; this page deals with the petrol K5 rows.
The one European engine
Only one K5 row lines up with a European car: the 2.0 T-GDI at 245 hp and 353 Nm, the Optima IV (JF) built from October 2016 to August 2018. As a turbo petrol it takes the GAN GT, which adds 42 hp and 60 Nm.
The other engines
The other rows belong to the K5 sold outside Europe: the 2.0 MPI at 150 or 160 hp and the 2.5 GDI at 194 hp and 246 Nm. All of them take the GAN GA+, which adds 18 or 19 hp to the 2.0 MPI and 23 hp and 30 Nm to the 2.5 GDI. The 2.0 MPI at 172 hp and 201 Nm is the Nu engine of the Optima III (TF); with the GAN GA+ it reaches 193 hp and 225 Nm.
Because the 2.0 MPI turns up at 150, 160 and 172 hp, go by the hp figure for your car. Treat these petrol rows as applying to imports, not to the Optima as Kia UK sold it. Match your engine to the catalogue before you order.

As standard it is 245 hp and 353 Nm; with the GAN GT the catalogue shows 287 hp and 413 Nm. The GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power on a turbo petrol like this. These are stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.

The GAN GA+ adds 23 hp and 30 Nm. Its rating on engines like this is up to 12% more power.
Can a Kia K5 be tuned without rewriting the ECU?

Is the K5 just a Kia Optima with a different badge?
K5 is the saloon's global name, and earlier generations were sold in Europe mostly as the Kia Optima. The 2019 K5 was never offered in Europe, so what applies under K5 follows the engine, not the name. A trim name from another market changes nothing: a trim is equipment, not an engine. The car you would find in Britain is the Optima JF, sold as a saloon and as the Sportswagon.
Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?
Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
