What makes the Nissan Skyline special
Nissan Skyline remap: which Skyline the catalogue means
To enthusiasts Skyline means the GT-R in its R32 to R34 forms, and none of those is in the catalogue. In Britain the car is simply the Nissan Skyline, identified by generation code (R32, R33, R34, V35, V36) and by Japanese badges such as 250GT, 350GT and GT-R. What the catalogue covers is another car: the V6-powered V35 and V36 saloons, so a tuning box for the Skyline here is a box for those engines.
In Germany Nissan's only official Skylines were the Datsun 240K-GT (1973 to 1978) and the Datsun Skyline (1978 to 1981). Most Skylines never reached British showrooms officially; they arrive as private or specialist imports. Only a few hundred GT-Rs reached Britain officially; the other R31 to R34 Skylines came in as grey imports from Japan.
V35, V36 and V37 by name
Built from 2001, the V35 was the Japanese Skyline; in the USA it was the Infiniti G35. In Europe the V36 became the Infiniti G37, offered with a single 3.7 V6 of 320 hp, and Germany got it in 2010. So a G37 bought in Europe is listed under Infiniti, not under Skyline. Nissan again offered no Skyline in Europe with the V37, which became the Infiniti Q50 in 2014.
What the catalogue holds are the Japanese versions. Those are the 2.5 VQ25DD (215 hp), the 250GT with the VQ25HR (225 hp), the 3.0 VQ30DD (260 hp) and the 3.5 VQ35DE (280 hp), plus a 3.0 with 240 hp and 312 Nm. Which engine does my imported Skyline have, V35 or V36?
The 2.5 VQ25DD, the 3.0 VQ30DD and the 3.5 VQ35DE go with the V35; the 250GT with the VQ25HR goes with the V36.
Skyline GT-R remap: why is the RB26DETT not on this page?
The GT-R's RB26DETT has no row in the catalogue. Those GT-R generations were never sold officially in Europe and arrive as grey imports. On an imported twin-turbo GT-R, the turbochargers and the condition of the engine need inspecting before any power is added.
What does the GAN GA+ add to the Skyline 3.5?
The catalogue gives the 3.5 as 280 hp and 363 Nm, and the GAN GA+ lifts that to 302 hp and 392 Nm. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power. Those are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.
Are the Infiniti G37 and Q50 just Skylines by another name?
In effect, yes: they are the European names of the V36 and the V37.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
