About the generation

What makes the Opel Corsa D special

Vauxhall Corsa D remap: the 1.2 and the 1.4 come first

For a Corsa D, the choice of tuning box mostly comes down to two petrol engines, the 1.2 and the 1.4. Both were at the heart of the line-up when sales started in October 2006. Neither has a turbocharger, so the box for either one is the GAN GA+. The catalogue lists the 1.2 at 80 hp and 110 Nm.

From the January 2010 update the 1.2 was also available with 85 hp, which the GAN GA+ takes to 95 hp. The 1.4 depends on its output: 90 hp up to October 2009, 100 hp from November 2009 and 87 hp from February 2010. In Britain it is simply the Vauxhall Corsa, and UK parts listings also label this generation the Corsa Mk III (D).

Diesels, turbo petrols and the VXR

The GAN GT also fits the 1.3 CDTi in 75, 90 and 95 hp versions and the 1.7 CDTi in 125 and 131 hp versions. So does the 1.4 Turbo ecoFLEX with 120 hp, which arrived in June 2012. The 1.6 Turbo is a GAN GT engine in all three states of tune: 150 hp in the GSi, 192 hp in the OPC and 211 hp in the Nürburgring Edition. The OPC is the Corsa VXR in Britain, and the 192 hp version is the one that matches the catalogue row.

Corsa D 1.2 remap: what does the 80 hp engine gain?

With the GAN GA+ the 1.2 goes from 80 hp and 110 Nm to 90 hp and 123 Nm. Across the three 1.4 outputs the gain is between 10 and 12 hp. Treat these as catalogue figures for the engine type, not a dyno result for your car.

Should I worry about the timing chain on a Corsa D petrol?

The 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4 petrols can stretch their timing chain on cars used mostly for short trips, and the warning sign is a rattle at idle and on a cold start. It is less common on the 1.4. UK used-car guides also flag chain-guide wear on the 1.2 and 1.4, and a tuning box does not fix a worn chain, so listen for that rattle before you fit one.

What does the GAN GT do for a Corsa D 1.3 CDTi?

Being a turbodiesel, it takes the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power. In the catalogue the 90 hp version gains 27 hp and 60 Nm, and the 75 hp version gains 22 hp and 54 Nm.

Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?

Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
