About the generation

What makes the Peugeot 407 special

Peugeot 407 2.0 HDi remap: three calibrations

The 2.0 HDi DW10 in the Peugeot 407 comes in three calibrations: 136 hp, 140 hp and 163 hp. The engine code tells them apart: the RHR is 136 hp and 320 Nm (2004 to 2009), the RHF is 140 hp and 320 Nm (2008 to 2010), and the RHH, which has a particulate filter, is 163 hp and 340 Nm from July 2009. On the 407 saloon and the 407 SW estate, the engine code and the FAP particulate filter decide which box fits, not the trim badge. The car was marketed in Britain with trims such as SE, Sport and Executive, which say nothing about the engine fitted.

After the August 2008 facelift the DW10 went first to 140 hp and later to 163 hp. All the 2.0 HDi versions take the GAN GT. On the 2.0 HDi 136 the EGR valve is the usual service point, particularly on cars used for short journeys, so have it checked before you fit a box. Production of the 407 began with the saloon in 2004; the SW estate followed in September 2004 and the Coupé at the end of 2005.

Other engines in the 407 range

The 1.6 HDi DV6TED4 produces 109 hp and 240 Nm, rising to 260 Nm on overboost. Turbo lubrication matters on the 1.6 HDi: carbonised oil in the feed pipe can starve the turbo, so check the oil feed first. The 2.2 HDi DW12 has twin turbochargers and makes 170 hp and 370 Nm; the catalogue lists it as the 2.2 HDi Biturbo. The V6 diesels are the Bi-Turbo versions: the 2.7 HDi with 204 hp and 440 Nm and the 3.0 HDi with 241 hp and 450 Nm.

In Britain the 2.7 V6 HDi came only with a six-speed automatic and is a relaxed cruiser rather than a hot diesel; its twin-turbo V6 layout is more complex than the four-cylinder diesels. From July 2009 the Coupé was left with two diesels, the 2.0 HDi at 163 hp and the 3.0 V6 HDi at 241 hp. For petrol, the catalogue covers the 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 and 3.0 V6, and all of them take the GAN GA+. Few petrol versions remained in Europe after the 2008 facelift.

Which GAN box fits the 407 Coupé with the 3.0 V6 HDi?

The 3.0 V6 HDi Coupé has its own listing with the GAN GT, and so does the 2.7 HDi with 204 hp and 440 Nm.

Is the 407 2.2 HDi 170 hp a single-turbo or twin-turbo engine?

Twin turbos: the 2.2 HDi is a biturbo, as the V6 diesels are.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
