Peugeot RCZ remap: what changes

What makes the Peugeot RCZ special
Peugeot RCZ remap: THP 200 or the RCZ R
The RCZ has a single petrol engine in three states of tune: the 1.6 THP with 156 hp, the same engine with 200 hp, and with 270 hp in the RCZ R. All three are the 1.6 Prince engine that PSA developed with BMW; the THP 200 and the RCZ R differ from the THP 156 in cylinder head and boost pressure. In Britain the RCZ is a single model line: standard cars with the 1.6 THP or the 2.0 HDi, topped by the high-performance RCZ R. For RCZ tuning the power output of your car decides the box, not the name on the tailgate. From March 2010 the THP 156 delivers 240 Nm, and from June 2010 the THP 200 delivers 275 Nm.
The RCZ R followed in autumn 2013: 270 hp, 330 Nm, a manual gearbox only and 3,054 cars built in total. Top speed is 250 km/h, and 305 of those cars were delivered to the United Kingdom. In the catalogue the RCZ R appears at 271 hp. Both the THP 200 and the RCZ R have variable valve timing on both camshafts as well as variable valve lift. All three take the GAN GT.
The diesel, and the coupé itself
The diesel is the 2.0 HDi FAP with 163 hp, rated at 320 Nm from 2010 and at 340 Nm in a version from 2012. The RCZ is a 2+2 coupé built on the 308 platform by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. Peugeot showed the concept in 2007 and the production car at the Frankfurt motor show in 2009. German dealers received it on 24 April 2010, and the facelift came in January 2013.
The last car was built in September 2015, with more than 67 thousand made in all. A six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic could be had with the THP 156. The RCZ was officially sold in Britain from 2010 until production ended in 2015.

What does an RCZ THP 200 gain from the GAN GT?
The 200 hp car reaches 234 hp and 355 Nm with the GAN GT fitted. Up to 30% more power is the headline rating for the GAN GT; the figures above are stated for this engine type and are not a dyno result for your car.
Where is the 270 hp RCZ R in the catalogue?
It has its own listing, apart from the THP 200: look for the 1.6 THP 270, which takes the GAN GT.

Which THP faults should you rule out before fitting a box?
Cars built before 2011, THP 156 and THP 200 alike, can have a weak hydraulic tensioner that lets the timing chain stretch; it shows as clicking and a loss of power, and the workshop remedy is a modified chain kit. Before 2013 the high-pressure fuel pump could also fail, which you notice as jerking under acceleration. Carbon build-up on the inlet valves is another check on the direct-injection 1.6 THP: rough idle, hesitation and flat acceleration are the signs, and a specialist clean is the usual remedy. A tuning box cannot make up for a worn part, so have the chain kit, the fuel pump and the inlet valves checked before you fit it.
RCZ THP remap or tuning box: what is the difference?
A remap writes new software into the engine control unit, whereas the GAN box changes nothing in it. Because the ECU software is never changed and the box can come off at any time, your manufacturer's warranty is preserved.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
