Chiptuning Smart
Up to 30% more power for your Smart
Our Smart catalog covers 27 engines (models: 3, generations: 5). For 26% of the engines there are the GAN GT (up to 30% more power) and GAN GTL (up to 25%) tuning boxes; for the rest, the GAN GA and GAN GA+ (up to 12%). Each engine’s figures are on its own page.
Smart plug-in remap: no changes to the ECU software
The tuning box sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals – unlike a flash remap, which rewrites the ECU. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

Smart remapping: questions
What does a tuning box add to the smart fortwo 453 0.9 turbo?
In the catalogue the 0.9 turbo goes from 90 hp and 135 Nm to 112 hp and 172 Nm with the GAN GT. The 109 hp Brabus, which needs premium unleaded, has no row in the catalogue. The GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power on turbo petrol engines; these are stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.
Which fortwo cdi and forfour 1.5 cdi versions are covered?
The fortwo 0.8 cdi made 41 hp at first, 45 hp from 2007 and 54 hp from July 2009, while the forfour 1.5 cdi came with 68 and 95 hp. Every one of those outputs is covered by the GAN GT in the catalogue.
0.7 turbo in the fortwo 450 and Roadster: which GAN box?
Both use the Mercedes M160, and the factory Brabus 0.7 at 75 hp belongs to the same engine family as the 50 and 61 hp versions. The catalogue matches these engines with the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12% more power.
smart tuning box or remap: what is the difference?
There are two ways to tune a smart: a remap rewrites the factory software, while the box works between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals. The factory software, checksums and flash counter stay as they were, and the engine keeps its factory protections. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed and the box can come off at any time.
Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from your engine's page.
Will a tuning box affect my Smart warranty?
No. The box does not change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved. On top of that, we give an engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.
Tuning box or remap: which should I choose?
A flash remap permanently rewrites the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning box adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute. A flash remap can be the better choice if the engine has upgraded hardware, or if the car is out of warranty and you accept the risks.
Smart chip tuning: what to know about the engines
smart fortwo remap: which smart do you drive?
Start by settling which smart you have: a fortwo, a forfour or a Roadster, and which generation. The engine family decides which GAN box fits, and it changes with every generation. The M160, a three-cylinder turbo petrol of 0.6 or 0.7 litres from Mercedes, runs in the fortwo C450 of 1998 to 2007 and the Roadster of 2002 to 2005. UK owners usually name a fortwo by its chassis code: 450, 451 or 453. From March 2007 to November 2014 the fortwo C451 used a Mitsubishi 1.0 instead: naturally aspirated at 61 or 71 hp, turbocharged at 84 hp, and 98 or 102 hp as the Brabus.
The 2014 C453 fortwo is a Renault Twingo III underneath, sharing its platform and engines: a naturally aspirated 1.0, and a 0.9 turbo of 90 hp that the Brabus takes to 109 hp. The cdi diesels are the fortwo's 0.8 and the first forfour's 1.5; the 1.0 mhd is just a petrol engine with start-stop and no electric motor. Petrol fortwo C453 production ended in June 2019, after orders closed in March 2019. In Britain the combustion-engined smart is no longer sold new, so these are used-car applications.
Which GAN box fits which smart engine
The cdi diesels and the 0.9 turbo take the GAN GT, rated at up to 30% more power. In the catalogue the 0.6 and 0.7 turbo engines of the fortwo C450 and the Roadster go with the GAN GA+, rated at up to 12%. The Roadster's 0.7 turbo comes in three outputs (61, 82 and 101 hp, the last being the Brabus), and the catalogue covers all three. The naturally aspirated 1.0 of the fortwo C453 also takes the GAN GA+. The UK C453 1.0 was listed at 71 hp, and the catalogue has a 71 hp row for it.
On a fortwo C451, note that the 84 hp turbo and the Brabus share the 1.0 turbo engine and differ only in output. Of the C451 turbo versions, only the 98 hp Brabus is in the catalogue. The 84 hp turbo and the 102 hp Brabus have no row in the catalogue. On the C453, the 90 hp turbo and the 109 hp Brabus share the 0.9 engine.

Two different cars called forfour
Two different cars have carried the forfour name. The W454 (2004 to 2006) sits on the Mitsubishi Colt platform, with 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5-litre petrol engines, a 1.5 cdi diesel and a 177 hp Brabus 1.5 turbo. There is no catalogue row for the Brabus 1.5 turbo.
The 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.5 cdi in the catalogue belong to this W454. The 2014 W453 shares its platform and engines with the fortwo C453, and its petrol versions ended in June 2019. The electric smart models are outside this page.
Which Smart models are in the catalog
The catalog covers 3 models from Smart. The most engines are listed for the ForTwo (16), ForFour (8) and Roadster (3). The biggest gain among the models is on the ForFour: up to +29 hp.
Naturally aspirated Smart engines
For 9 naturally aspirated engines from Smart, there is the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% lower fuel consumption in ECO mode, which means better MPG. You can fit it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
How to find your Smart engine
Pick your model from the list above, then the generation by model year and chassis code, then the engine by the power output in your registration document. The engine page shows the exact gain and the price of the box.
