What makes the Toyota Caldina special
Toyota Caldina remap: the 3S-GTE turbo
The Caldina engine that matters is the 2.0 GT-Four's turbocharged 3S-GTE, rated at 260 hp and 324 Nm. A Caldina GT-Four remap, or a tuning box, is about this engine, and searches such as Caldina GTT turbo and Caldina GT4 tuning point to it as well. The same 260 hp 3S-GTE sits in the T210 GT-T (ST215) from 1997 and in the T240 GT-Four (ST246) from 2002. What separates them is the intercooler size and the engine revision, the 4.5th generation of the 3S-GTE against the 5th.
Whichever car you own, the 3S-GTE job is the same, since the T210 and T240 share the 260 hp rating. Toyota GB did not sell the Caldina, so British examples are Japanese-market imports. Imports keep the Japanese badges, GT-T for the ST215 and GT-FOUR for the ST246, with no official British trims or generation names. Not every import is a turbo: the second generation also came with a 1.8-litre petrol and naturally aspirated 2.0-litre petrols, so check which engine yours has.
The naturally aspirated Caldinas
The T240's 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE is listed at 132 hp and 170 Nm in the catalogue. The 2.0-litre 1AZ-FSE makes 152 hp and 200 Nm, with front-wheel drive (AZT241) or all-wheel drive (AZT246). The T190, the first generation, ran from 1992 to 2002, with the T210 from 1997 to 2002. In the T190 the TZ-G with all-wheel drive carried the 2.0 3S-GE, 175 hp, from February 1995.
T210 engines ranged from the 1.8 7A-FE and 2.0 3S-FE at 135 to 140 hp, through the 2.0 3S-GE at 190 hp, to the 2.2 3C-TE diesel at 94 hp. Production of the T240, a sport estate with a four-speed automatic and no diesel, ran from September 2002 to June 2007. The Caldina was a Japan-only Toyota; the T190 estate's European relative was the Carina E. Editions of the GT-Four include the C-Edition and the N-Edition, and the intercooler is mounted on top of the engine.

What should a used 3S-GTE have checked before a tuning box goes on?
On a used 3S-GTE, have the turbocharger, oil supply and cooling checked before you fit anything. The box itself plugs into the existing connectors and comes off in about a minute.
Which GAN device suits the Caldina 1.8 and 2.0i?
Both engines take the GAN GA+ and the GAN GA; with the GA+ the catalogue shows 148 hp and 190 Nm for the 1.8-litre 1ZZ-FE and 170 hp and 224 Nm for the 2.0-litre 1AZ-FSE. On these engines too the GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power.
Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
