What makes the Toyota Fortuner special

Toyota Fortuner remap: diesels for a heavy car

A tuning box for the Fortuner centres on the diesels, and a Fortuner 2.8 GD remap starts from 177 hp and 450 Nm, the figures of the 2015 to 2020 engine. That 177 hp engine is the one in the catalogue; the 2.8 that followed in 2020, at 204 hp and 500 Nm, is not in it. Toyota does not offer the Fortuner in Europe; it is built for Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, and in Europe the Land Cruiser Prado fills this class. Europeans know the 2.4 and 2.8 GD diesels from the Hilux, which runs the same engines.

The 2.4 GD has no entry of its own in the Fortuner catalogue; the same engine is listed as the 2.4 D-4D of the Toyota Hilux. Toyota GB never sold the Fortuner new, so any Fortuner in Britain is an import, brought in privately or through a specialist. Imports are usually described as a seven-seat Fortuner, with no British trim range or model-year names. On a second-generation import the 2.8 diesel is the engine to identify first: check whether yours is the 177 hp or the later 204 hp version.

Older diesels and the petrol engines

The first generation (AN50, AN60) ran from 2004, the second (AN150, AN160) from 2015. The 3.0-litre 1KD-FTV makes 163 hp and 343 Nm, against 102 hp and 260 Nm for the earlier 2.5-litre 2KD-FTV. In some markets the 2.5 gained a variable-geometry turbo in 2012, which took it to 144 hp.

Petrol comes as the 2.7-litre 2TR-FE, about 160 hp in the first generation and 166 hp in the second, and the 4.0-litre 1GR-FE V6 at 238 hp. Whatever the question, the petrol engines go with the GAN GA+ and the diesels with the GAN GT.

Is my 2.5 D-4D the 102 hp or the 144 hp engine?

The earlier engine makes 102 hp; the variable-geometry turbo version, built from 2012 in some markets, makes 144 hp.

Tuning box or flash remap for a Fortuner diesel?

Unlike a flash remap, which rewrites the software in the control unit, the GAN box adjusts the sensor signals and leaves the factory software, checksums and flash counter untouched. It comes off in about a minute without electronic or mechanical traces.

Does a GAN tuning box affect my car insurance?
