Toyota Hilux VIII remap: what changes

What makes the Toyota Hilux VIII special
Toyota Hilux (2015 on) remap: two diesels, chosen by the year
A Toyota Hilux remap depends on the year, because the engine range changed during the generation; the Hilux VIII was shown for Europe at Geneva in 2016, and deliveries in Germany began that summer. Up to summer 2020 the Hilux VIII (AN120 and AN130) was sold in Europe with one engine only, the 2.4 D-4D rated at 150 hp and 400 Nm. It is the 2GD-FTV diesel, paired with a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox and fitted with AdBlue.
The facelift in summer 2020 added the 2.8 D-4D, with 204 hp and 500 Nm. A 48-volt mild hybrid system followed from 2024 (from March 2025 in Germany), and the output stayed at 204 hp and 500 Nm. Toyota UK counts it as the eighth-generation Hilux, in Active, Icon and Invincible trims with Single Cab, Extra Cab and Double Cab bodies.
Hilux 2.8 D-4D: the GAN GT figures
In the catalogue the 2.8 D-4D appears as the mild hybrid, and the GAN GT takes it from 204 hp and 500 Nm to 247 hp and 605 Nm, a gain of 43 hp. The 2.4 D-4D takes the GAN GT as well, and its figures are in the first answer below.

Hilux 2.4 D-4D 150 remap: how much more power and torque does the GAN GT add?
With the GAN GT the engine goes from 150 hp and 400 Nm to 187 hp and 505 Nm, and the box is rated at up to 30% more power. Those are catalogue figures for the engine type, not a dyno result for your own pick-up.
Does the 48V mild hybrid Hilux 2.8 D-4D 204 take the same box?
Yes, the 2.8 D-4D works with the GAN GT, and the 48-volt system does not change the engine's 204 hp and 500 Nm. The starter-generator of the 48-volt system is rated at 16 hp and 65 Nm and assists the engine. In Britain the mild hybrid comes with the six-speed automatic gearbox.
Will a tuning box affect DPF regeneration if my Hilux does short runs?
On short runs under light load a diesel particulate filter can clog up. Regeneration is managed by the factory ECU software, and the GAN box leaves that software as it is.
Does a GAN tuning box affect my car insurance?
Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
