What makes the Toyota Kluger special
Toyota Kluger remap: a petrol V6 for Japan and Australia
Known as the Kluger in Japan and Australia, the Highlander reached Europe only in January 2021, as a seven-seat hybrid. That hybrid, the XU70 with the 2.5-litre A25A-FXS and about 248 hp of system output, has no row in the catalogue, so this page covers the earlier petrol cars. A Kluger remap or tuning box therefore means the petrol generations XU20 to XU50. Kluger modifications run from suspension to off-road kits to the 3.5 V6; this page is about the engine alone.
The question most people ask is the 3.5 V6: the 3.5-litre 2GR-FE of the XU40 and XU50 is listed at 273 hp and 337 Nm. Toyota GB sold the car as the Highlander and never as the Kluger, with orders opening in January 2021. The British car was the fourth-generation Highlander in Excel and Excel Premium trims, sold until summer 2023; earlier Kluger generations turn up only as private imports.
Each generation's engines
The first generation, the XU20 of 2000 to 2007, used the 2.4-litre 2AZ-FE and the 3.0-litre 1MZ-FE, plus the 3.3-litre 3MZ-FE from 2004. Australia received the first generation from October 2003, and only with the 3.3. With the XU40 of 2007 to 2013 came the 3.5-litre 2GR-FE, its five-speed automatic becoming a six-speed in 2010. From 2013 to 2019 the XU50 kept the 3.5, with a facelift in 2016.
The Crown Kluger sold in China is a separate model. The fourth generation, the XU70 of 2019, combined the 3.5-litre 2GR-FKS V6, offered until 2022, with the 2.5 hybrid. The catalogue covers the 2.4 at 160 hp, the 3.0 at 220 hp, the 3.3 at 230 hp and the 3.5 at 273 hp, all with the GAN GA+.

What does the GAN GA+ give a Kluger 3.5 V6?
The 3.5 V6 rises from 273 hp and 337 Nm to 295 hp and 364 Nm with the GAN GA+. On a petrol V6 like this GAN rates the GA+ at up to 12% more power, a stated gain for the engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
Is a Highlander tuned the same way as a Kluger?
Yes, it is one car under two names: Japan and Australia call it the Kluger, and in Australia Highlander is a trim level. A Highlander bought in Europe after January 2021 has the 2.5 hybrid, which has no row in the catalogue. The British Highlander had the 2.5 petrol-electric hybrid only, so the petrol rows on this page describe the earlier imports, not a car from a Toyota GB showroom.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
