What makes the Toyota Land Cruiser special

Toyota Land Cruiser V8 (200 Series) remap: one diesel in Europe

The European Land Cruiser 200 has a single engine, the 4.5 V8 D-4D (1VD-FTV, 4,461 cc), which has two turbochargers and always comes with an automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive. Britain and Germany know the car as the Land Cruiser V8, while the rest of the world calls it the 200 Series. Building started in September 2007 and the diesel reached German buyers in March 2008. That makes it one diesel for a tuning box, and its build date decides the output.

The engine made 286 hp and 650 Nm up to March 2012, and 272 hp after that. European sales stopped in 2015, because the diesel could not meet Euro 6. UK listings describe the 4.5 diesel as the Land Cruiser V8.

How do I tell whether my Land Cruiser V8 is the 286 hp or the 272 hp version?

Cars built before April 2012 have the 286 hp engine; later ones have the 272 hp version. Both take the GAN GT, the box for turbodiesels. Those are catalogue figures for the engine type, not a dyno result for your car.

Does the box affect the automatic gearbox on a Land Cruiser V8?

The box does not reprogram the gearbox. The European J200 comes with a six-speed automatic.

Why is there no petrol V8 among the European Land Cruiser 200 engines?

Petrol versions, including a 4.0 V6, a 4.6 V8 and a 5.7 V8, were built for other markets. In Europe the diesel stayed the sole engine through both facelifts.

Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?

Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
