Not sure which engine you have?
The badge alone is not enough: in this generation, the same engine designation came in different power outputs, each with its own calibration. Check the power output in your registration document and find the matching row.

Toyota RAV4 IV remap: what changes
The GAN box plugs in between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals, while a flash remap rewrites the ECU itself. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the Toyota RAV4 IV special
Toyota RAV4 Mk4 remap: the 2016 facelift changed the diesels
With a RAV4 Mk4 (XA40), the engine depends on the year your car was built. It matters when choosing a tuning box, because the diesels changed with the facelift in January 2016. Up to then the diesels were the 2.0 D-4D at 124 hp and the 2.2 D-4D at 150 hp, both available from April 2013.
After the facelift Toyota used a BMW-sourced 2.0 D-4D with 143 hp and introduced the 2.5 Hybrid for the first time. The two 2.0 diesels have nothing in common: they are separate engines, not one family. In Britain Toyota named the petrol the 2.0 Valvematic and the electrified version simply the RAV4 Hybrid.
The early RAV4 diesels with a GAN GT: what the box adds
The GAN GT takes the 2.0 D-4D from 124 hp and 310 Nm to 161 hp and 395 Nm. The 2.2 D-4D rises from 150 hp and 340 Nm to 193 hp and 433 Nm. The gains are 37 hp and 43 hp respectively, within the up to 30% more power the GAN GT is rated for.
The 2.0 D-4D with 143 hp has no row of its own in the RAV4 IV catalogue; the same engine appears as the 2.0 D-4D under the Toyota Avensis III. The petrol 2.0 Valvematic, at 151 hp and 195 Nm, takes the GAN GA+ and reaches 169 hp and 218 Nm; the box is rated at up to 12% more power. On a naturally aspirated petrol such as the Valvematic, the gain shows in throttle response and modest figures, not in a diesel-style torque jump.
Toyota RAV4 IV remap: common questions
Which 2.0 D-4D remap fits my RAV4 Mk4: the 124 hp or the 143 hp 2.0 D-4D?
A RAV4 2.0 D-4D built between April 2013 and January 2016 has Toyota's own 124 hp engine, code 1AD-FTV, and the 2.2 D-4D with 150 hp was offered alongside it. Cars from February 2016 on have the BMW-built 2.0 D-4D with 143 hp, code 2WW.
Is the box the same for the RAV4 2.2 D-4D 150 and the 2.2 D-CAT 150?
The catalogue treats the two as one entry, the 2.2 D-4D. Both make 150 hp and 340 Nm: the 2.2 D-CAT comes with the six-speed automatic, the 2.2 D-4D with the manual.
RAV4 Hybrid 197 hp: is that the combined figure?
Yes: 197 hp is the combined output of the system, and the 2.5 petrol engine alone makes 155 hp and 210 Nm. In the catalogue the 2.5 Hybrid appears as the 2.5h, with 197 hp.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
