Volvo C30 remap: what changes

The GAN box plugs in between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals, while a flash remap rewrites the ECU itself. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the Volvo C30 special

Volvo C30 remap: the T5 and the rest of the range

The T5 tops the C30 range: a 2.5 five-cylinder turbo with 220 hp until 2007 and 230 hp and 320 Nm after that. Volvo sold the C30 in Britain from around the turn of 2006–07 until the model was dropped in 2013, simply as the C30 with no generation or Mk number, and with engine badges such as D2, D3, D4, D5 and T5. The GAN GT covers the T5 and all the diesels, from the 1.6 D at 109 hp to the 2.4 D5 at 179 hp.

The Ford-based petrol 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0, and the Volvo 2.4, take the GAN GA+. R-Design is a trim, not an engine, so it makes no difference to which box fits.

Volvo C30 T5 remap: what does the 230 hp engine gain with the GAN GT?

A C30 T5 230 moves from 230 hp and 320 Nm to 293 hp and 409 Nm; the GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power. Treat these as stated gains for the engine type rather than a dyno result from your own car.

Are the C30 D3, D4 and 1.6 D covered by a tuning box?

Yes, the GAN GT fits all three, and so does the 2.0 D at 136 hp, which is a PSA engine. On the D4, 177 hp and 400 Nm become 227 hp and 505 Nm. British D3 cars are rated at 150 hp and 350 Nm, which matches the catalogue row.

Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?

Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
