About the generation

What makes the Volvo V50 special

Volvo V50 remap: the 2.0D and the engines that followed

The 2.0D is the V50's 136 hp diesel, built from 2004 to 2010. A GAN GT box is the match for it. In Britain it was sold as the V50 estate, and aftermarket listings often call it the V50 Mk1. The 2010 to 2011 update brought the 1.6 D2 at 114 hp, the five-cylinder 2.0 D3 at 150 hp and the D4 at 177 hp, and all three also take the GAN GT.

The small 1.6 D, 109 hp and badged DRIVe, was built from 2005 to 2010. A V50 diesel used mainly for short urban trips is more likely to have particulate-filter trouble than one on regular motorway runs, so think about how yours is driven. The 230 hp petrol T5, built from April 2007, is another GAN GT fit. The 2.0 petrol with 145 hp and 185 Nm is naturally aspirated and has its own catalogue row.

The catalogue takes the 136 hp 2.0 D to 176 hp with the GAN GT. Treat these as stated gains for the engine type rather than a dyno result from your own car.

Which GAN box fits the V50 1.6D?

With the GAN GT, the 109 hp, 240 Nm 1.6 D reaches 142 hp and 319 Nm. A V50 fitted with the GAN box keeps its factory software, checksums and flash counter as they were.

Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?

Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
