What makes the BMW X5 E70 special
BMW X5 E70 remap: two diesels that look alike
From the outside, two of the BMW X5 E70 diesels look the same, but what they carry underneath is different. The xDrive40d gets 306 hp and 600 Nm from two turbochargers; the M50d gets 381 hp and 740 Nm from three. In Britain the later cars are badged xDrive30d, xDrive35d, xDrive40d, xDrive50i and M50d, while the earlier ones were sold as the X5 3.0d, 3.0si and 4.8i. The June 2010 facelift introduced the N57 diesels and the xDrive35i and xDrive50i petrols, and the M50d followed in July 2012. Before that the diesels were the M57, with 235 hp or 286 hp.
Because the E70 code spans every version built from 2006 to 2013, the tuning box is matched to the engine and its number of turbochargers, not to the model code. The xDrive30d, with 245 hp and 540 Nm, makes do with a single turbocharger. The 3.0si (272 hp) and the 4.8i (355 hp) are naturally aspirated petrols, and both take the GAN GA+. On the six-cylinder petrol engines, the electric water pump deserves an early check, because it can fail with little warning. The X5 M, built from July 2009, has the twin-turbo S63 V8 with 555 hp.

What does the GAN GT add to the BMW X5 M E70?
It rises from 555 hp and 680 Nm to 649 hp and 796 Nm with the GAN GT. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.
BMW X5 E70 remap or tuning box: what about the drivetrain?
A remap replaces the factory software in the engine control unit, whereas the tuning box leaves that software alone. The GAN box does not reprogram the gearbox either. The ECU software is never changed and the module can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved.
Does a GAN tuning box affect my car insurance?
Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
