BMW X5 G05 remap: what changes

What makes the BMW X5 G05 special
BMW X5 G05 remap: diesels and petrol cars
Built since November 2018, the BMW X5 G05 falls into two halves, diesel and petrol, and the catalogue lists separate engines for each. In Britain the G05 has been badged xDrive30d, xDrive40i, M50d, M50i and xDrive45e, with xLine and M Sport trims. Both diesels use the B57 six-cylinder, the xDrive30d with 265 hp and 620 Nm and the four-turbo M50d with 400 hp. The M50d belongs to the early cars only, from 2018 to 2020, so do not expect to find it on a later G05. The xDrive30d gained a mild hybrid and 286 hp from July 2020.
Petrol power comes from the B58 in the xDrive40i and from the twin-turbo N63 V8 in the 530 hp M50i. The xDrive40i had 340 hp up to September 2020 and has 333 hp from December 2020, both with 450 Nm. The April 2023 facelift added a 381 hp xDrive40i, the M60i instead of the M50i and the xDrive50e instead of the xDrive45e. Treat the xDrive45e separately, because its quoted output is combined petrol-electric power and not the figure for the combustion engine. The G05 body code covers all of these versions, so choose the tuning box by engine and build date.
What the GAN GT gives the M50i
The catalogue takes the M50i from 530 hp and 750 Nm to 620 hp and 878 Nm with the GAN GT. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.
BMW X5 G05 remap: common questions
X5 xDrive40i: is yours the 340 hp or the 333 hp car?
BMW's technical data give 340 hp from November 2018 to September 2020 and 333 hp from December 2020, at the same 450 Nm. BimmerToday reports that the engine itself did not change and that the figure was adapted to the 48-volt on-board network, as on the 540i. The xDrive40i in the catalogue is the 340 hp version. The 333 hp xDrive40i has no X5 row of its own; the same engine is in the catalogue as the 540i of the BMW 5 Series G30.
BMW X5: tuning box or flash remap?
A flash remap puts a new program in place of the factory software in the engine control unit. The GAN box works between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals, so the factory software is left as it is. The ECU software is never changed and the module can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved.
Which GAN box suits an X5 xDrive30d with 286 hp, or an xDrive40d?
Neither the 286 hp xDrive30d nor the xDrive40d has its own X5 row; look for the same engines as the 30d and 40d of the BMW X6 G06. The xDrive40d, with 340 hp and 700 Nm, was built from April 2020 to February 2023.
Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
