What makes the Jeep Compass special

Jeep Compass remap: three diesels under three names

The Compass diesels carry three names, the Volkswagen 2.0 CRD, the Mercedes 2.2 CRD and the Fiat 2.0 MultiJet, so a Compass remap starts with knowing which one you have. The tuning box is chosen by the engine, whatever the badge says. Jeep sold both generations of the Compass new in Britain. The first Compass, the MK that launched in November 2006, ran on the Volkswagen 2.0 PD TDI, code BYL, at 140 hp and 310 Nm, with four-wheel drive from April 2007.

The May 2011 facelift brought the Mercedes OM651, the 2.2 CRD, in two forms: 136 hp with front-wheel drive or 163 hp with four-wheel drive, both at 320 Nm. The second Compass, the MP built in Melfi from 2017, uses the Fiat 2.0 MultiJet at 140 hp or 170 hp, both with 350 Nm and four-wheel drive; it was sold until July 2020. In the catalogue the Fiat diesels appear as 2.0 CRD (Euro 6), the Volkswagen as 2.0 CRD PD and the Mercedes as 2.2 CRD. The 2.0 PD takes the GAN GA+, whereas the 2.2 CRD and the 2.0 MultiJet take the GAN GT.

Petrol Compass engines and the rest of the range

The first Compass offered the 2.4 World Engine at 170 hp and 220 Nm, with four-wheel drive and a manual gearbox. The 2.0 World Engine, at 156 hp to 158 hp and 190 Nm, joined in 2011 on front-wheel drive. Both petrol engines take the GAN GA+. The second generation's 1.4 MultiAir Turbo came in 140 hp and 170 hp forms, and the catalogue lists it once, at 165 hp, for the GAN GT. Britain's 140 hp car is rated at 230 Nm and the 170 hp car at 250 Nm, so compare the figure on your documents with the table before you order.

The 1.4 MultiAir at 140 hp and the 1.6 MultiJet at 120 hp have no separate Compass rows; look for the same engines as the 1.4 Multiair and the 1.6 CRD under the Jeep Renegade. The catalogue does not include the 1.3 FireFly T4, the 4xe plug-in hybrid, the 1.6 MultiJet at 130 hp or the 1.5 e-Hybrid. The third generation of 2025, electric or hybrid, has no entry either. Trailhawk is a trim level, not an engine. In Britain the two generations are usually told apart by years rather than Mk numbers, and the second-generation trims are Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk.

What does the GAN GT add to a Compass 2.0 MultiJet 170?

The GAN GT takes the 2.0 MultiJet from 170 hp to 206 hp. On turbo diesels the GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power, and on the naturally aspirated petrol engines the GAN GA+ at up to 12%. Those are the stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading of your car. For towing, the 2.0 MultiJet 4x4 is the Compass to look at, and added torque is felt most on a hill.

Compass 2.0 CRD at 140 hp or 2.2 CRD: which version is mine?

The Volkswagen diesel is the 2.0 CRD PD at 140 hp and 310 Nm, built from April 2007 to 2010. The Mercedes diesel has two outputs, 136 hp and 163 hp, both with 320 Nm.

Which row suits a petrol Compass?

For the first Compass pick the 2.4 at 170 hp and 220 Nm or the 2.0 at 158 hp and 191 Nm. The 2.4 rows at 150 hp and 175 hp are not European versions.

How does a tuning box differ from an ECU remap on the Compass?
