Kia Rio III remap: what changes

What makes the Kia Rio III special
Kia Rio Mk3 remap: the diesels first
The Rio 3 (UB) diesel range opens with a three-cylinder 1.1 CRDi of 1,120 cc, the smallest engine in the European line-up. That engine takes the GAN GT: with 75 hp and 170 Nm, the 1.1 CRDi gains 22 hp and 46 Nm. UK used-car guides present the 1.1 CRDi as the economy diesel with modest performance, so it is where added pull is most welcome.
The 1.4 CRDi, with 90 hp and 220 Nm, takes the GAN GT too and gains 27 hp and 66 Nm. From January 2015 both diesels meet a stricter emissions standard, and ISG start-stop versions are offered. In Britain this is the Rio Mk3, sold in trims 1, 2, 3 and 4 with EcoDynamics on some economy versions; the trim does not change the box, the engine does.
Rio petrol engines
The 1.2 CVVT is naturally aspirated, with 85 hp or 84 hp from 2015; the catalogue lists it at 87 hp, and the GAN GA+ adds 10 hp and 15 Nm. In Britain the same engine is badged 1.25 rather than 1.2. The 1.25 is described as an engine that needs revs for its performance, and the 1.4 as the quicker petrol. The 1.4 CVVT with 109 hp arrived in the 2011 Rio, built from June 2011, and takes the GAN GA+ in the same way, gaining 13 hp and 16 Nm.

Is a Kia Rio 1.1 CRDi remap worth it on the three-cylinder Rio 3?
The GAN GT takes the 1.1 CRDi from 75 hp and 170 Nm to 97 hp and 216 Nm. At 75 hp the 1.1 CRDi is the least powerful engine in the Rio 3 range. A turbodiesel is what the GAN GT is rated for, with up to 30% more power; read the figures as stated for the engine type, not as a dyno reading of your own car.
Rio 3 1.4 CVVT: which GAN box?
The 1.4 CVVT takes the GAN GA+; the catalogue lists it at 107 hp and 135 Nm, against 109 hp and 137 Nm on European cars. For naturally aspirated engines the GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power.
Which GAN box suits the 90 hp Rio 3 1.4 CRDi?
The 90 hp 1.4 CRDi takes the GAN GT and gains 27 hp and 66 Nm. The ECU software is never changed and the box can come off at any time, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
