Land Rover Defender remap: what changes
The GAN box plugs in between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals, while a flash remap rewrites the ECU itself. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the Land Rover Defender special
Land Rover Defender remap: the Td5 and the 2.4
British buyers know the old Defender by its body length, 90, 110 or 130, and by engine badges such as Td5 and TDCi, not by Mk numbers. This page deals with the L316 Defender, in 90, 110 and 130 form, built until 2016. For a Defender remap with a tuning box there are two engines to consider: the Td5 at 122 hp and, from 2007 to 2011, the Ford 2.4 diesel, also at 122 hp. The GAN GA+ lifts the Td5 from 122 hp to 137 hp, while the GAN GT takes the 2.4 to 159 hp.
These are stated gains for the engine types, not a dyno reading of your own car. On a Td5, oil creeping up the injector wiring harness towards the ECU is a known weak point, so have the harness and connector inspected before you add anything. A 2.2 diesel with the same output as the 2.4 followed from 2012 to 2016. The 2.2 Puma diesel has no row in the catalogue yet.
Land Rover Defender remap: common questions
Does the catalogue include the 2020 Defender?
The L663's D200, D250 and D300 diesels and its P400 petrol have no rows in the catalogue. The P300 has no row under Defender; look under the Jaguar F-Pace, where the same engine is listed as the 2.0 T.
ECU remap or GAN tuning box on a Defender: which is the better fit?
A remap writes new software to the ECU; the GAN tuning box writes nothing there, it adjusts the sensor signals, and it comes off again in about a minute. The ECU software is never changed, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved, and the box can be taken off at any time.
Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
