What makes the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque special

Range Rover Evoque remap: the engine changed in 2015

Britain calls the first Evoque the Mk1, or L538, and the second the Mk2, or L551. The early Evoque 2.2 TD4 makes 150 hp and 400 Nm; the GAN GT takes it to 193 hp. The build date decides which engine your Evoque has, because the diesel changed in 2015. The 2.2 ended in February 2015. The facelift brought the 2.0 Ingenium TD4 at 150 hp, which again reaches 193 hp with the GAN GT, and a 179 hp version that reaches 230 hp. The front-wheel-drive eD4 at 150 hp uses the same 150 hp figures.

The 2.2 SD4 at 190 hp goes to 244 hp, and the 2.0 Si4 petrol at 241 hp goes to 306 hp. On the early 2.2 diesel, EGR-cooler leaks, with coolant loss and white smoke, are worth ruling out before a box goes on. On the 2.0 Ingenium diesel, repeated short urban journeys can interrupt DPF regeneration and thin the engine oil with diesel, so a mostly-town car needs its servicing in order first. The second Evoque (L551), from 2019, is a separate generation with mild-hybrid 2.0 Ingenium engines.

Evoque TD4 150 or SD4 190 remap: which engine is yours?

They are one 2.2 engine at two power levels, 400 Nm for the TD4 and 420 Nm for the SD4. With the GAN GT the TD4 reaches 193 hp and the SD4 244 hp. Treat these as stated gains for the engine types, not dyno readings of your car.

Evoque stage 1 remap or GAN tuning box: what is the difference?

A stage 1 remap changes the software inside the control unit, whereas the GAN tuning box sits between the sensors and the ECU and only adjusts the signals. The ECU software is never changed, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved, and the box can be taken off at any time.

Does the catalogue cover the second-generation Evoque (L551)?

In part: the D150 and the D180 appear on this page as the 2.0 TD4, at 150 hp and 380 Nm and at 179 hp and 430 Nm. The D240 and the P250 have no row of their own under Evoque; the same engines are listed as the 2.0 D and 2.0 T of the Range Rover Velar. The D200 and the P300 work the same way, under the Jaguar F-Pace's 2.0 D and 2.0 T. There are no rows yet for the D165, the 1.5 P160, the P200 or the plug-in hybrids.

Does a GAN tuning box affect my car insurance?

Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
