What makes the Land Rover Range Rover special
Range Rover remap: the body code decides the engine
The catalogue files the P38A, the L322 and the L405 under one name, so a Range Rover tuning box has to be matched to the body code. In Britain the Range Rover, the Range Rover Sport, the Velar and the Evoque are separate model lines. The P38A, built from 1994 to 2002, is the second-generation car, with Rover petrol V8s and a BMW 2.5 TD diesel making 136 hp. In the L322 (2002 to 2012) the BMW 3.0 Td6 with 177 hp was fitted until March 2006, and the 3.6 TDV8 with 272 hp followed. The 4.4 TDV8 with 313 hp replaced it in July 2010.
Petrol L322s run from the 4.4 V8, at 286 hp and later 305 hp (the catalogue lists 306 hp), up to the 396 hp 4.2 V8 Supercharged. August 2009 added a 5.0 V8 with 375 hp and a supercharged 5.0 with 510 hp. The L405 (2012 to 2021) offers the 3.0 TDV6 with 258 hp, the 3.0 SDV6 with 275 hp and the 4.4 SDV8 with 339 hp; the Ingenium D300 and D350 came later. Its petrols are the 3.0 V6 Supercharged, at 340 or 380 hp, and the 5.0 V8 Supercharged, at 510 to 565 hp. The L405 P400e is a plug-in hybrid and has no row in the catalogue yet.
Which GAN tuning box fits which Range Rover
For the TDV6 and the V8 diesels the box is the GAN GT: the 3.0 Td6, 3.6 TDV8 and 4.4 TDV8 of the L322, and the 3.0 TDV6 and 4.4 SDV8 of the L405. The 3.0 and 5.0 supercharged engines take the GAN GT as well, while the catalogue pairs the 4.2 V8 Supercharged with the GAN GA+. The 4.4 V8 at 286 and 306 hp is naturally aspirated, so it takes the GAN GA+. The Range Rover Sport, with the L320 and L494 codes, has its own model page in the catalogue.

How much more power does a tuning box give the L322 4.4 TDV8?
With the GAN GT the 4.4 TDV8 goes from 313 hp and 700 Nm to 366 hp and 819 Nm. The smaller L322 diesels gain 71 hp and 140 Nm on the 272 hp 3.6 TDV8 and 37 hp and 82 Nm on the 177 hp 3.0 Td6. These are the stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading of your car.
L405 Range Rover tuning box: what do the 3.0 TDV6 and the 4.4 SDV8 gain?
The 3.0 TDV6 with 258 hp gains 68 hp and 134 Nm; the 4.4 SDV8 with 339 hp (listed at 340 hp) gains 58 hp and 119 Nm.
Range Rover Vogue V8 remap: which box fits the supercharged engines?
Britain also knows the Range Rover as the Vogue; a Vogue with the 5.0 V8 Supercharged takes the GAN GT, and the 4.2 V8 Supercharged of 2005 to 2009 takes the GAN GA+. The 396 hp 4.2 Supercharged gains 32 hp and 44 Nm with the GAN GA+, and the 510 hp 5.0 Supercharged gains 74 hp and 85 Nm with the GAN GT.
What does the GAN GA+ add to a 4.4 V8 Range Rover?
The 286 hp BMW-built engine gains 23 hp and 35 Nm, and the 306 hp Jaguar engine gains 24 hp and 35 Nm. On a naturally aspirated V8, up to 12% more power with the GAN GA+ is the ceiling.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
