Mini plug-in remap: no changes to the ECU software

The tuning box sits between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals – unlike a flash remap, which rewrites the ECU. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

FAQs

Mini remapping: questions

Cooper S: supercharged or turbo, and which figures are mine?

Supercharging ended with the R53 (163 hp); every Cooper S from the R56 onwards is turbocharged. There is no catalogue row for the supercharged R53 Cooper S yet. For the turbocharged R56 Cooper S, the 174 hp car gains 37 hp and 50 Nm and the 184 hp car gains 39 hp and 50 Nm.

What will a naturally aspirated Mini Cooper gain from a tuning box?

A 1.6 Cooper is rated at 116 hp and 150 Nm; with the GAN GA+ it reaches 130 hp and 168 Nm. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power, and that is the limit to expect from a naturally aspirated engine. These are the stated gains for the engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.

Which Mini diesels can take a tuning box, and what do they gain?

All the diesels, from the One D up to the Cooper SD, suit the GAN GT, which is rated at up to 30% more power. On the Countryman R60, the 111 hp Cooper D gains 32 hp and 78 Nm and the 143 hp Cooper SD gains 41 hp and 88 Nm.

Mini remap or tuning box: which should I choose?

They work differently. A remap rewrites the factory software in the engine control unit (ECU), while the GAN tuning box sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts their signals instead. The factory software, checksums and flash counter stay as they are, and the engine keeps its factory protections active. The ECU software is never changed and the box can come off at any time, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved.

Is there a GAN box for the Mini Coupé and Roadster?

Yes: the Coupé (R58) and Roadster (R59) share the Cooper S at 184 hp, the John Cooper Works at 211 hp and the Cooper SD at 143 hp, and the GAN GT covers all three. Both are discontinued UK-market models built mainly in the 2010s.

Does a GAN tuning box affect my car insurance?

Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from your engine's page.

Will a tuning box affect my Mini warranty?

No. The box does not change the ECU software and can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved. On top of that, we give an engine warranty: 2 years with the GAN GT, 1 year with the GAN GTL.

Tuning box or remap: which should I choose?

A flash remap permanently rewrites the maps in the ECU and leaves a trace in the flash counter. The GAN tuning box adjusts the sensor signals instead: the ECU stays in factory condition, and you can return the car to stock in about a minute. A flash remap can be the better choice if the engine has upgraded hardware, or if the car is out of warranty and you accept the risks.

About Mini engines

Mini chip tuning: what to know about the engines

Mini Cooper remap: one badge, three engine eras

Which box suits a Mini depends on the engine underneath: the badge on the boot lid has barely changed, but the engine family behind it has. BMW has been building the Mini since 2001, and its engines since then fall into three eras: the Tritec 1.6 of the first generation, the Prince engines across the R56 family, and BMW's own modular petrol and diesel units in the F generation. The version badge tells you what is under the bonnet: One is the entry car, Cooper the middle of the range, a D means diesel and SD is the strongest diesel.

A Mini Cooper S remap always involves forced induction, only the type changes: a supercharger on the R53, a turbo on the R56 and Countryman R60, and a 2.0 turbo on the F56 and Countryman F60. In the UK the marque is badged MINI, and these generations were sold as Hatch, Convertible, Clubman and Countryman, with Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works as the performance badges.

First two eras: Tritec and Prince

The R50 and R52 (2001–2006) ran the naturally aspirated Tritec 1.6, at 90 hp as the One and 116 hp as the Cooper, while the R53 Cooper S came with a supercharger. Both suit the GAN GA+, which adds 11 hp and 17 Nm to the One and 14 hp and 18 Nm to the Cooper. The Prince family replaced it from 2006, with the N12 and N16 naturally aspirated and the N14 and N18 turbocharged.

An R56 Cooper S at 184 hp gains 39 hp and 50 Nm with the GAN GT. The Countryman R60 One, at 98 hp, runs the naturally aspirated N16 and gains 12 hp and 18 Nm.

The BMW-engined F generation

On the F56 the One (102 hp) has a three-cylinder turbo and the Cooper (136 hp) a 1.5 turbo, and the GAN GT suits both. The 2023 UK brochure lists the Cooper's 1.5 TwinPower Turbo at 136 hp, so the 136 hp row is the one to match. The One gains 30 hp and 52 Nm and the Cooper 39 hp and 64 Nm.

On the Countryman, the F60 Cooper S is a 2.0 turbo at 192 hp, and the GAN GT adds 40 hp and 59 Nm. Diesels are covered by the GAN GT too. A Clubman F54 Cooper SD at 190 hp gains 35 hp and 105 Nm, and a Convertible F57 Cooper D at 116 hp gains 35 hp and 79 Nm.

Cooper S timing chain: what to check first

A worn timing chain can rattle on a cold start, and on the N14-engined Cooper S the chain and its tensioner are a known weak point. If you are thinking of a remap or tuning box on an early R56 Cooper S, have the chain and tensioner checked first. Mini's service bulletins cover N14 engines built up to about May 2009 and put the noise down to an under-tensioned chain or a tensioner that hasn't filled with oil.

Which Mini models are in the catalog

The catalog covers 9 models from Mini. The most engines are listed for the Mini (30), Clubman (22) and Countryman (22). The biggest gain among the models is on the Mini: up to +46 hp.

Naturally aspirated Mini engines

For 13 naturally aspirated engines from Mini, there is the GAN GA+: up to 12% more power and up to 15% lower fuel consumption in ECO mode, which means better MPG. You can fit it yourself, in most cases in under 15 minutes.
