Opel Astra J remap: what changes

What makes the Opel Astra J special
Vauxhall Astra J remap: six engines behind one “1.6”
Which 1.6 does your Astra J have? The engine code, not the figure on the badge, decides how an Astra J is tuned. On a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 remap the badge could mean any of six engines. The A16XER, 115 hp, has no turbocharger and a timing belt, which makes the GAN GA+ its box. Among the turbo petrols are the A16LET (179 hp, built until November 2012), the A16XHT (170 hp) and the A16SHT (200 hp). The 1.6 SIDI Turbo is direct-injection, and the 200 hp version is the three-door GTC's.
The 1.6 CDTI is a turbodiesel with 110 and 136 hp, offered from May 2014. The GAN GT covers those turbo petrols and the 1.6 CDTI. It also covers the older 1.7 CDTI with 110, 125 and 131 hp and the 1.4 Turbo with 120 and 140 hp. In Britain this is the Vauxhall Astra, known as the Mk6 as well as the J, and sold as a hatchback, Sports Tourer estate, GTC coupe and VXR. On a 1.6 CDTI, a cold-start chain rattle and a clogged DPF after short trips are the two things to settle before you add torque. If your Astra has the M32 six-speed manual, listen for whine in the higher gears before you add torque.
Body styles and the facelift
Astra J sales began on 4 December 2009 with the five-door hatchback. The Sports Tourer followed in November 2010 and the three-door GTC in January 2012. The saloon and the facelift both arrived in September 2012.

Vauxhall Astra GTC remap: what does the GAN GT give the 1.6 SIDI Turbo with 200 hp?
The catalogue lists this engine at 200 hp and 280 Nm, and at 256 hp and 365 Nm with the GAN GT. On turbocharged engines the GAN GT adds up to 30% more power. The performance model is badged Astra VXR in Britain and OPC elsewhere; its 2.0 Turbo makes 280 hp, and the catalogue gain with the GAN GT is 48 hp. Treat both as catalogue figures for the engine type; neither is a dyno measurement of your own car.
Which GAN box fits the 115 hp 1.6 in the Astra J?
The A16XER, with 115 hp and 155 Nm, is listed at 129 hp and 174 Nm with the GAN GA+.
How do I tell the 110 hp 1.6 CDTI from the 136 hp one?
The 110 hp version makes 300 Nm and the 136 hp version 320 Nm. The catalogue gain with the GAN GT is 33 hp on the 110 hp version and 40 hp on the 136 hp one.
Does a GAN tuning box affect my car insurance?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
