Porsche 911 996 remap: what changes
More power and torque without rewriting the ECU or swapping any parts. The GAN box only adjusts the engine sensor signals. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the Porsche 911 996 special
Porsche 996 remap: the 3.4 or the 3.6
A tuning box for a Porsche 996 starts with the year of your car, since the year decides the engine: the 996.1 up to 2001 has the 3.4, and the 996.2 from model year 2002 has the 3.6. Standard output is 300 hp and 350 Nm on the 3.4 Carrera, and 320 hp and 370 Nm on the 3.6 Carrera. It was the first water-cooled 911, offered with a six-speed manual gearbox or the Tiptronic S automatic. Both engines are naturally aspirated flat-sixes, so the box for either is the GAN GA+.
The 996 Turbo (420 hp), the Turbo S (450 hp) and the later GT3 (381 hp) have no rows in the catalogue. Only the first 996 GT3, with 360 hp, is covered, on the Porsche 911 GT3 page. UK buyers and owners simply talk about the 996.1 and the 996.2, in coupé or Cabriolet form.
The IMS bearing and other talking points
The intermediate shaft bearing of the M96 engine, known as the IMS, is the best-known weak point of the 996. A failed bearing loses the valve timing and wrecks the engine, and the early 3.4 is the one most often linked with it. If you are buying one, ask for proof that the bearing has been inspected or replaced. The rear main seal, where the crankshaft leaves the engine case, is another point worth asking about on a 996.
What Porsche 911 owners say about GAN
Simple and convenient. Satisfied with result. I connected this device via the attached cable and hid it behind the pile floor covering. Up to 100 km, I notices the result: the throttle response at 1,2,3 gear is better, the fuel consumption did not change (I use the “Dynamic” mode). I think the result is good for such…
Porsche 911 996 remap: common questions
Does a tuning box change the IMS risk on a 996?
The box neither repairs nor replaces the bearing, so have its condition checked before you fit anything.
How much does the GAN GA+ add to a 996 Carrera 3.4 or 3.6?
On the 3.4 the catalogue shows 324 hp and 378 Nm, up from 300 hp and 350 Nm; on the 3.6 it shows 346 hp and 400 Nm, up from 320 hp and 370 Nm. Those are catalogue figures for the engine type, not a dyno result for your car. The GAN GA+ range is quoted at up to 12% more power.
996 ECU remap or a tuning box?
A flash remap puts new software into the engine control unit, whereas the GAN box adjusts the sensor signals, leaves the ECU software unchanged and leaves no electronic or mechanical traces once it is removed.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
