What makes the Volkswagen Transporter T4 special
VW T4 2.5 TDI remap: the diesel behind the camper
The VW T4 (Typ 7D) was in production from September 1990 to June 2003, and the 2000–03 section of the catalogue covers only its final years. It was sold as the Transporter, Caravelle, Multivan and the Westfalia California camper, and the T4 camper is the version most people know today. The T4a has the short nose; from 1996 the Caravelle, Multivan and California moved to the long nose (T4b), and the van kept the short one. For a tuning box the catalogue has two versions, both of the five-cylinder 2.5 TDI. One is the 88 hp engine, which has no intercooler, and the other is the 102 hp engine. Both are turbodiesels, and the catalogue gives both the GAN GA+.
The 2.5 TDI with 151 hp, the 2.0 and 2.5 petrol engines and the 2.8 VR6 with 140 hp have no rows in the catalogue. The 151 hp version came only as a Caravelle or Multivan with the long nose. From 2001 the 102 hp engine with the code AXL is a detuned 151 hp unit, made for the Syncro. The 2.8 VR6 with 204 hp is on the VW Multivan page. UK listings use VW T4 and Transporter IV, with panel van, Kombi, Shuttle, Caravelle and camper as the body-style names. In Britain the 2.5 TDI is the T4 diesel for carrying loads, and on older vans oil or coolant leaks and poor running are the usual things to check.

The 88 hp version, at 195 Nm, reaches 99 hp and 218 Nm with the GAN GA+.
What does the GAN GA+ do for the 2.5 TDI with 102 hp?
The GAN GA+ takes the 2.5 TDI, 102 hp and 250 Nm, to 114 hp and 280 Nm. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power, and these are catalogue gains for the engine type, not a dyno result for your van.
Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
