What makes the Volkswagen Golf IV special
VW Golf Mk4 remap: pump-injector diesels and the petrol range
On a Golf Mk4, a figure of 150 hp points to one of two engines, the pump-injector 1.9 TDI or the 1.8T in the GTI, and the catalogue gives both the GAN GA+. The PD diesel (EA188) was built with 101, 115, 131 and 150 hp; on a Golf 4 the tuning box for any of the four is the GAN GA+, and the 115 hp version is listed in the catalogue as 116 hp. There were also older 1.9 TDI versions with a distributor pump, rated at 90 and 110 hp.
Built as a hatchback from October 1997 to August 2003 (the Variant ran until 2006), the Golf IV is also known as the Golf Mk4 or Typ 1J. The body never had a facelift in Europe; only the engines and equipment were updated step by step. UK badges included S, SE, GTI, GT TDI, V5 and V6 4MOTION, though availability varied by year and body style.
The petrol range: from the 1.4 to the VR6
The petrol range opens with the 1.4 at 75 hp and the 1.6 at 101 and 105 hp. Above them come the 2.0 at 115 hp, the 2.3 VR5 at 170 hp and the 2.8 VR6 at 204 hp. The 1.8T is a turbocharged petrol engine rated at 150 hp, the same output as the GTI.
On a 1.8T, ignition coils and boost-control parts such as the N75 valve, diverter valve and vacuum hoses are the usual faults, so have them sorted before you fit a box. The 1.9 TDI with 90 hp and the 1.8T with 180 hp of the GTI anniversary model have no rows under the Golf IV; the same engines are listed as the 1.9 TDI with 90 hp and the 1.8T RS under the Skoda Octavia. There is no row yet for the 1.9 TDI with 110 hp or the R32.

Golf 4 1.9 TDI 150 remap: how much more power does the GAN GA+ give?
The GAN GA+ takes the 1.9 TDI PD from 150 hp and 320 Nm to 168 hp and 358 Nm. It is rated at up to 12% more power, and these are catalogue gains for the engine type, not a dyno result for your car.
What does the GAN GA+ do for a Golf 4 1.6 or 2.0?
On the 1.6 it lifts 105 hp to 118 hp, and on the 2.0, listed at 116 hp, to 130 hp. On these engines the GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power.
What is the gain on the Golf 4 1.9 TDI with 131 hp?
With the GAN GA+ the pump-injector 1.9 TDI goes from 131 hp and 310 Nm to 147 hp and 347 Nm. Germany's ADAC rates the 1.9 TDI engines as very durable. On the PD engines, use oil that meets VW 505.01, because the wrong or tired oil contributes to camshaft and injector-rocker wear.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?
Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
