Each engine has its own tuning box: GAN GT / GTL or GAN GA / GA+. Prices are per box and include the current discount.
Not sure which engine you have?
The badge alone is not enough: in this generation, the same engine designation came in different power outputs, each with its own calibration. Check the power output in your registration document and find the matching row.

Volkswagen Passat B5 remap: what changes
More power and torque without rewriting the ECU or swapping any parts. The GAN box only adjusts the engine sensor signals. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the Volkswagen Passat B5 special
VW Passat B5 remap: the pump-injector 1.9 TDI
After the facelift, the pump-injector 1.9 TDI with 130 hp makes 285 Nm, or 310 Nm with the six-speed manual gearbox. Every 1.9 TDI in the Passat B5 takes the GAN GA+ as its tuning box, including the pump-injector 1.9 TDI with 101 hp, a turbo diesel. In Britain this generation is usually called the Passat Mk5, in S, SE, Sport and Highline trims, and the facelifted cars are the B5.5.
B5 or B5.5: which engines come with the facelift
The original B5 (Typ 3B) was in production from August 1996 to September 2000. A Passat B5.5 remap starts from the facelift (Typ 3BG, called Passat GP by VW), which ran from October 2000 to February 2005. The 1.8 with 125 hp ended with the facelift, and so did the 2.3 VR5 with 150 hp, which gave way to a 170 hp VR5 20V.
The 2.0 with 130 hp and the 4.0 W8 with 275 hp were added later, the W8 being built from 2001 to 2004. The turbocharged 1.8T with 150 hp stayed in the range throughout. The 2.8 V6 with 193 hp and the W8 are naturally aspirated, so they take the GAN GA+.
Volkswagen Passat B5 remap: common questions
Passat B5 1.9 TDI remap: what does the 130 hp version gain?
With the GAN GA+ the 130 hp 1.9 TDI, listed in the catalogue at 131 hp, reaches 147 hp. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power, and these are catalogue gains for the engine type, not a dyno result for your car.
Which GAN tuning box suits the Passat B5 1.8T?
The 150 hp 1.8T takes the GAN GA+. This turbo engine can build up oil sludge, which in the worst case blocks the oil pickup. Sludge and turbo trouble on the 1.8T usually follow neglected servicing, so check the service history first.
What can wear on the pump-injector 1.9 TDI of the Passat B5?
The pump-injector units run at around 2,000 bar, and the nozzles and injector elements can wear. Camshaft lobes and roller rockers can wear too, especially at high mileage. A soft clutch pedal and other clutch problems also turn up on used 1.9 TDI cars.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
