What makes the Volkswagen Passat B7 special

VW Passat B7 remap and the diesel software update

Before you fit a tuning box to a Passat B7 2.0 TDI, one point needs settling. For engine codes CFFB and CFGB, the question is whether the diesel emissions scandal touched the car. It did: the EA189 diesels were affected, and the KBA ordered a mandatory recall of 2.4 million cars in Germany on 15 October 2015.

The 23R7 recall programme updates the ECU software. The B7 is Typ 362 as a saloon and Typ 365 as an estate (Variant) or Alltrack; it was built from August 2010 to October 2014 and is also called the Passat 7. In Britain it was sold mainly as a saloon and an Estate, in S, SE, Executive and Highline trims, plus the Alltrack.

Diesel choices: 140, 170 or 177 hp

The 2.0 TDI was offered with 140 and 170 hp, and with 177 hp from the autumn of 2012. All three outputs, 140, 170 and 177 hp, take the GAN GT, and so does the 1.6 TDI with 105 hp. The Alltrack uses the same figures, because the catalogue does not list it separately, so you choose by engine and power. UK sales material confirms the 1.6 TDI at 105 hp and the 2.0 TDI at 140 and 170 hp, so look for your car among those rows first.

Petrol engines up to the 3.6

The 1.4 TSI, at 122 and 160 hp, is an EA111 engine, and on those built up to 2012 the timing chain can stretch. The 2.0 TSI at 211 hp comes from the second generation of the EA888 family. The 1.4 TSI with 160 hp and the 1.8 TSI with 160 hp both take the GAN GT, while the 3.6 with 299 hp takes the GAN GA+.

Can a tuning box go on a Passat B7 2.0 TDI that has had the emissions software update?

Yes. The box leaves the ECU software and the recall update as they are, and you still choose by engine and power. Your manufacturer's warranty is preserved, because the box never changes the ECU software and can be removed at any time.

Passat B7 2.0 TDI 170 remap: what does the GAN GT add?

The 2.0 TDI goes from 170 hp and 350 Nm to 204 hp and 411 Nm with the GAN GT. The GAN GT is rated at up to 30% more power, and these are catalogue gains for the engine type, not a dyno result for your car.

What does the GAN GT do for the Passat B7 1.4 TSI with 160 hp?

As standard the 1.4 TSI Twincharger has 160 hp and 240 Nm; with the GAN GT it reaches 206 hp and 312 Nm.

Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?

Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
