What makes the Volkswagen Passat B6 special
VW Passat B6 remap: pump injector or common rail
Two Passat B6 diesels can both be rated at 140 hp and 320 Nm and still be quite different engines. Up to early 2008 the 2.0 TDI was the pump-injector EA188 PD, and during 2008 it gave way to the common rail EA189. The catalogue lists them separately: the pump-injector engines take the GAN GA+, the common rail engines the GAN GT.
That makes the build date the thing to check before choosing a tuning box; the car, also known as the Passat 3C, was built from February 2005 to July 2010. In Britain it came as a saloon or an Estate, in trims including S, SE, Sport and SEL.
Common rail diesels, petrols and the R36
The GAN GT covers the common rail 2.0 TDI in 110, 140 and 170 hp versions, the BlueTDI with 143 hp and the 1.6 TDI with 105 hp. The 1.9 TDI at 105 hp takes the GAN GA+. Two petrol turbos, the 1.8 TSI at 160 hp and the 2.0 TSI at 200 hp, also use the GAN GT.
The 2.0 TSI moved from the belt-driven EA113 to the chain-driven EA888 in January 2008. The R36 is a naturally aspirated 3.6 FSI with 299 hp and 4Motion, and it takes the GAN GA+. The UK launch petrol was the naturally aspirated 1.6 FSI with 115 hp, which has no row in the catalogue yet; the 1.6 listed there at 102 hp, which takes the GAN GA+, is a different engine.

How can I tell a pump-injector 2.0 TDI from a common rail 2.0 TDI on my Passat B6?
A pump-injector 2.0 TDI has no fuel rail, while the common rail engine carries the code CBAB at 140 hp and CBBB at 170 hp. The changeover was gradual from February 2008, so a car from early 2008 can have either.
Passat B6 2.0 TDI 140 remap: how much does a tuning box add?
The pump-injector engine goes from 140 hp and 320 Nm to 157 hp and 358 Nm with the GAN GA+. The common rail engine goes from 140 hp and 320 Nm to 160 hp and 381 Nm with the GAN GT. The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power and the GAN GT at up to 30%. Those are catalogue gains for the engine types, not a dyno result for your car.
What should I check on a pump-injector Passat B6 before fitting a tuning box?
The hexagon shaft that drives the oil pump on the pump-injector 2.0 TDI can wear, which can leave the engine short of oil.
Does a GAN tuning box affect my car insurance?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
