What makes the BMW 3 Series E36 special
BMW E36 remap for a rear-wheel-drive car
Rear-wheel drive makes the BMW E36 a regular sight at track days. In Britain it is simply the 3 Series, known to enthusiasts as the E36, and it was sold as a Saloon, Coupé, Touring and Convertible under badges such as 316i, 318i and 323i. The engine decides which tuning box fits an E36, and the catalogue lists three naturally aspirated petrol engines. Production ran from 1990 to 2000, and the 2000 in the catalogue name marks the end of the Compact rather than the start of the car.
A 320i has 150 hp and 190 Nm either way: the M50 was fitted until 1995 and the M52 from 1994. The 328i, from January 1995, runs the M52 and makes 280 Nm. On the 318is, the 1.9-litre M44 of 1996 onwards makes 180 Nm, against 175 Nm for the 1.8-litre M42 it replaced.

What does the GAN GA+ add to an E36 320i or 328i for track days?
The GAN GA+ is rated at up to 12% more power on a naturally aspirated four- or six-cylinder engine.
Do the Nikasil bores of the early E36 M52 sixes matter?
On M52 sixes built between 1994 and 1998, the Nikasil bore coating can wear if the engine runs on high-sulphur fuel. BMW then switched to iron cylinder liners, and the later M52TÜ is free of the problem. The M50 in the 320i and 325i before 1995 has nothing to do with it.
E36 tuning box or flash remap: what is the difference?
The GAN box sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts the signals they send, so the factory software is left as it is. A flash remap works the other way round and rewrites that software. The GAN box comes off in about a minute, with nothing written to the ECU.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?
Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
