The GAN box plugs in between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals, while a flash remap rewrites the ECU itself. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the BMW 3 Series F3x special
BMW F30 320d remap: the engine changed in July 2015
Until July 2015 the F30 320d had the N47 diesel with 184 hp; from then on it has the B47 with 190 hp. F30 is the Saloon, F31 the Touring and F34 the Gran Turismo, and the facelift arrived on 25 July 2015. In Britain the 2015 facelift is known as the F30 LCI, and the diesel badges run from the 316d and 318d through the 320d and 330d to the 335d, with 318i, 320i, 328i, 330i, 335i and 340i on the petrol side. Choose the 320d tuning box by build date, since the date tells you which engine is under the bonnet. Not every diesel changed at the same time: the 325d kept its 218 hp N47 until 2016 and then switched to the B47 with 224 hp.
The 330d carried the N57, with 258 hp and 560 Nm, straight through the facelift, and the 313 hp 335d stayed as it was. The 320i kept its 184 hp on the petrol side, even though the N20 gave way to the B48. The 328i was replaced by the 330i with 252 hp, and the 335i by the 340i, which has the B58 and 326 hp. The 316d with 116 hp and the 318d with 143 hp are common UK badges too, and both have their own rows in the table.

A 320d rated at 190 hp and 400 Nm reaches 230 hp and 484 Nm with the GAN GT. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.

F30 320d: GAN tuning box or ECU remap?
An ECU remap changes the parameters stored in the control unit, and it normally involves diagnostics and dyno measurements. A tuning box works between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts the signals they send. The GAN box is the second kind. The ECU software is never changed and the box can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved.
What should you know about the N47 timing chain on an F30 320d?
The F30 kept the N47 until 2015, and the 325d until 2016; its timing chain is on the gearbox side. From July 2015 the B47 took over, which is a different engine.
F30 320i: is it the N20 or the B48?
Both engines give the 320i 184 hp and 270 Nm: the N20 until July 2015, the B48 afterwards.
Will my insurer need to know about the tuning box?
Yes, declare it. British insurers treat extra power as a modification, so the safe course is to tell them before you fit the box. How they treat it varies from one insurer to another, so ask before you fit the box; the standard and tuned figures you will be asked for are in the table on this page.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
