BMW 3 Series E46 remap: what changes

About the generation

What makes the BMW 3 Series E46 special

BMW E46 remap: the engines in Germany's E46 fleet

This page is about engine power from a tuning box and has nothing to do with body kits or styling parts. In Britain these cars are known as the E46 3 Series, and the Saloon, Touring, Coupé, Convertible and Compact came with badges from the 316i and 318i up to the 320d and 330d. The German register listed more than a hundred thousand E46 cars on 1 January 2025.

The largest groups there were the 316ti Compact with 116 hp, the 320Ci Convertible with 170 hp and the 320i Saloon with 170 hp. Next come the 318i with 118 hp and the 330Ci with 231 hp. Every one of these groups runs a naturally aspirated petrol engine, and those engines take the GAN GA+.

The diesels, and which body is which

In September 2001 the 320d moved from 136 hp to 150 hp, with the common-rail M47TÜ taking over. March 2003 brought the M57TÜ and 204 hp to the 330d. Build dates were April 1998 to February 2005 for the Saloon and October 1999 to June 2005 for the Touring; the Coupé continued until June 2006, the Convertible until February 2007, and the Compact ran from June 2001 to December 2004. In the paperwork the codes are E46/4 for the Saloon, E46/3 for the Touring and E46/2 for the Coupé.

BMW 3 Series E46 remap: common questions

BMW 320d remap: is your E46 the 136 hp or the 150 hp car, and what does the GAN GT add?

The earlier M47 has 136 hp; the M47TÜ with common rail, from September 2001, has 150 hp. Fitted with the GAN GT, the 150 hp engine makes 193 hp and 421 Nm instead of 150 hp and 330 Nm. On this common-rail 320d, check the swirl flaps, the turbo and the injectors before you add torque. These are stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.

Swirl flaps and the 330d automatic: what should you check on an E46 first?

On the M47TÜ and M57 diesels the screws holding the intake swirl flaps can work loose, which lets a flap drop into a cylinder, and the usual cure is to blank off or remove the flaps. A 330d with 204 hp and 410 Nm and an automatic gearbox is held to 390 Nm in software, because its gearbox is rated for 390 Nm. The GAN box does not touch the gearbox, so that 390 Nm limit stays where it is.

What can a tuning box do for an E46 320i or 318i?

Both are naturally aspirated and take the GAN GA+, which is rated at up to 12% more power. On a 170 hp engine like the 320i, that comes to about 20 hp at most.

Does a GAN tuning box affect my car insurance?

Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.

Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?

Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
