What makes the BMW 3 Series G20 special
BMW G20 remap: the 330i changed on one date
The G20 330i had 258 hp up to June 2022 and 245 hp since July 2022, on the same B48 engine. On the 245 hp car the B48 is a variant with the exhaust manifold built into the cylinder head. The G20 is the Saloon and the G21 the Touring, and the facelift arrived in May 2022. Britain knows the car as the 3 Series Saloon or Touring, and the trims have included SE, Sport, M Sport and M Sport Pro Edition, with xDrive versions as well.
Because the build date decides which version you have, the 330i tuning box is matched to it. The 318i no longer has the three-cylinder engine of earlier generations: from March 2020 it is the 2.0-litre B48 with 156 hp. The 318d (150 hp) and 320d (190 hp) are B47 diesels, and from 2020 both come with a 48-volt mild hybrid.
What the GAN GT adds to each 330i
The 258 hp 330i goes to 302 hp with the GAN GT, and the 245 hp car to 287 hp, both reaching 468 Nm. These are the stated gains for this engine type, not a dyno reading from your own car.
BMW 3 Series G20 remap: common questions
Is the G20 318i still the old three-cylinder engine?
No. From March 2020 the European 318i G20 has the 2.0-litre B48B20 with 156 hp and 250 Nm. All three petrols, the 318i, 320i and 330i, are fitted with the eight-speed automatic. The GAN box does not reprogram the gearbox.
BMW 330e remap: which power figure does the GAN box work with?
The 330e is a plug-in hybrid: its petrol engine makes 184 hp, and the complete system makes 252 hp, or 292 hp in boost mode. The catalogue works from the petrol engine, so the starting figure is 184 hp rather than the system output. Because the 330e is a plug-in, charging access and journey pattern matter as much as power, and cars built before mid-2024 quote up to 37 miles of official electric range.
G20 3 Series: tuning box or flash remap?
A flash remap overwrites the factory software in the engine control unit, but the GAN box sits between the engine sensors and the ECU and adjusts the signals instead. The ECU software is never changed and the box can be removed at any time, so your manufacturer's warranty is preserved.
Do I need to tell my insurer about a GAN tuning box?
Yes. In the UK a power increase counts as a modification, and insurers expect to be told about it before you drive with the box fitted. Each insurer handles it differently, so check with yours first and quote the before-and-after output from the table above.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
