BMW 3 Series E90 remap: what changes
The GAN box plugs in between the sensors and the engine control unit (ECU) and adjusts their signals, while a flash remap rewrites the ECU itself. Your manufacturer’s warranty is preserved: the ECU software is never changed, and the box can be removed at any time.

What makes the BMW 3 Series E90 special
BMW E90 remap: September 2007 split the range
On an E90 the build date decides which engine version you have, and so which tuning box applies; only engine power is covered here, not styling parts or body kits. Britain calls the Saloon the E90, with the E91 Touring, the E92 Coupé and the E93 Convertible alongside it, in badges from the 316d and 318i to the 335d and 335i, mostly in SE and M Sport trims. In September 2007 the four-cylinder petrols changed from the N46 to the direct-injection N43, which took the 318i from 129 hp to 143 hp and the 320i from 150 hp to 170 hp. The diesels moved from the M47 to the N47 too, with the 320d rising from 163 hp to 177 hp and the 318d from 122 hp to 143 hp.
On the earlier M47 diesels the inlet-manifold swirl flaps are the part to check, and blanking or removing them is a common precaution. The 325i stayed at 218 hp, but its 2.5-litre N52 gave way to the 3.0-litre direct-injection N53. The September 2008 facelift put the 330d on the N57 with 245 hp, and by March 2010 the 320d had reached 184 hp. The 335i kept its 306 hp throughout, although in March 2010 the N55, with a single twin-scroll turbo, replaced the twin-turbo N54.
Body codes and build figures
Saloon production (E90) ended in October 2011, while the E91 Touring ran from September 2005 to May 2012. The E92 Coupé was built from June 2006 to June 2013, and the E93 Convertible until October 2013. In total about 3.0 million E9x cars were made, with 2007 the peak year at more than half a million.

E90 325i with 2.5 litres or 3.0 litres: which one is in the catalogue?
Both 325i engines make 218 hp: the 2.5-litre N52, built from January 2005 to August 2007, has 250 Nm, and the 3.0-litre N53, from September 2007, has 270 Nm. The catalogue row with 218 hp and 270 Nm is the 3.0-litre N53, which takes the GAN GA+. The 2.5-litre N52 has no 3 Series row; look for it as the 525i of the BMW 5 Series E60.
Should I check the N47 timing chain on a 320d E90 built since September 2007?
The N47 timing chain is at the gearbox end of the engine and does wear; a metallic rattle from the back of the engine is the warning sign. The worst-affected engines date from March 2007 to January 2009, and a check from about 100 thousand km makes sense. In Britain the chain history is one of the first things to verify before you tune or buy a late 320d.
BMW 320i remap with 150 hp or 170 hp: what does the GAN GA+ add?
The 150 hp N46 with 200 Nm reaches 168 hp and 224 Nm, and the 170 hp N43 with 210 Nm reaches 190 hp and 235 Nm. Both are naturally aspirated, so the GAN GA+ applies, rated at up to 12% more power. Read these as stated gains for the engine type rather than a dyno result from your own car.
Should I declare the GAN box to my insurer?
Tell them. A tuning box raises the output, and in Britain that is a declarable modification like any other performance change. Policies differ, so a quick call to your insurer before fitting is the safe route; the figures they will ask for are the stock and GAN outputs listed here.
Is a tuning module the same as a Stage 1 remap?
Not quite. Stage 1 usually means an ECU remap without replacing any parts. The tuning module also works without replacing parts, but it does not change the ECU software: it adjusts the sensor signals, comes off in about a minute, and the OFF button in the app restores the factory settings.
