THE HISTORY OF CHIP TUNING OR HOW IT ALL BEGAN
Even in the days of horseless carriages, technical progress never stood still. Today, the automotive industry and the world of chip tuning are advancing at a cracking pace. To get to grips with the history of chip tuning, let’s first take a look at how the automotive world came to be.
In 1769, Frenchman Nicolas Joseph Cugnot built the first steam-powered automobile, which back then could muster a top speed of just 4.5 km/h. Nowadays, we can barely fathom cars trundling along at such a pace, but at the time, it was a groundbreaking leap for the automotive industry.
The next big step in automotive history came with the production of cars powered by internal combustion piston engines, which eventually shoved steam-powered vehicles into the history books. A rather notable chapter unfolded in 1886 when Karl Benz threw his hat into the ring, creating the first petrol-powered car, dubbed the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. By the dawn of the 20th century, electric cars had also begun to pop up.
The Birth of Chip Tuning
The story of chip tuning itself kicks off in the 1980s. Back then, engineers would manually tinker with the engine control unit (ECU) to boost performance in racing cars—a process we now call ECU remapping. The chip tuning industry also has ties to the famous BMW marque. In 1939, a car rolled out featuring an engine control module, better known as the ECU. This clever bit of kit, made up of one or more microcomputers, handles engine regulation, managing everything from fuel injection to ignition timing—factors that influence both power and fuel efficiency. The microcomputer runs a programme stored in a memory device (EPROM), and the ECU takes charge of the whole engine management show, fine-tuning all the car’s vital functions.
It was around then that BMW’s engineers decided to have a go at tweaking the petrol combustion process in the engine through remapping. They synchronised the fuel mixture delivery with the ignition system to ramp up revs and torque. This very approach laid the groundwork for what we now know as chip tuning.
Chip Tuning in Russia
In Russia, chip tuning took a bit longer to catch on and was first aimed at home-grown motors. But as Western companies and tech flooded the market, the demand for car remaps surged, especially for foreign models.
